The Atom's Fixed Size

Vaisheshika Sutras 7.1.20

Meaning · English

The size that is eternal is the round one.

Vaisheshika holds that every substance has a size, and it counts size as a guna, a quality that belongs to a substance. So what size does the smallest thing have? That thing is the paramanu, the atom. For the school it is the partless unit all matter is built from, never made and never destroyed. The sutra names its size: parimandala, literally 'round', the smallest size there is. The reasoning comes from the sutra just before: a size that sits in an eternal thing is itself eternal. A pot's size begins when the pot is assembled and ends when it breaks. The atom is never assembled, so its size never begins or ends. Shankara Mishra's commentary reads the sutra as giving the school's own technical name for this size. He notes that the sutras elsewhere call the same thing parimandalya. So, for the school, there is one size that nothing can enlarge, shrink, create or destroy, and it sits at the floor of the physical world.

Picture a mosaic wall built from identical small square tiles. The wall can grow, shrink, crack or come down, and its size changes each time. Every tile keeps exactly the size it had at the start. The wall's size is the size of a made thing, so it comes and goes with the wall. The tile's unchanging size stands for parimandala, the size of what is never made.

Modern ontology still asks what kinds of thing exist and whether a whole is anything more than its parts. The Vaisheshika answer is that real wholes are built from real partless units. That remains one recognisable position in the debate. Physics is a different matter. Today's atoms have measured sizes, are made of nuclei and electrons, and can be split. Their size is not even sharp, because the electron cloud has no hard edge. The paramanu was never a measured particle. It is a philosophical posit: the point where division has to stop if matter is not to be divisible forever. Whether nature has a smallest scale is still an open question. The idea that the basic units never change does not fit today's particles, which can be created and destroyed.
