Why the Mind Is Minute

Vaisheshika Sutras 7.1.23

Meaning · English

Since that vastness is absent in it, the mind is atom-sized.

The question behind the sutra: space and the self were just called all-pervading, so why not the mind too? The objection the commentary raises sounds reasonable. The mind, manas, the inner organ that links the self to the senses, has no touch, like space. It is also where knowing happens, like the self. Kanada's answer is that the mind lacks vibhutva, all-pervasiveness, so it is anu, atom-sized. Shankara Mishra's Upaskara gives the reason. If the mind touched every sense at once, sight, sound and taste would each register at the same instant. We could never be absorbed in one thing and miss another, yet we plainly are. He then closes a gap. Not being everywhere only shows the mind is limited, as a pot is. So he adds that one body needs only one mind, that giving it parts is a needless assumption, and that something without touch cannot build up a larger whole. What remains, for the Vaisheshika, is a partless point that meets one sense at a time.

Picture a dark room lit by a ceiling bulb. Every corner shows at once. Now picture the same room with only a small flashlight. You see the chair, then the shelf, then the door, one spot at a time. The Vaisheshika mind is the flashlight's spot, not the ceiling bulb. Because it is small, it can rest on only one sense at a time.

The observation holds up well. Cognitive psychology finds a real bottleneck in attention. Doing two demanding tasks at once costs accuracy or speed. People absorbed in one scene often fail to notice an obvious thing beside it, which is called inattentional blindness. The explanation is where the views part. The brain handles many sensory streams in parallel, mostly without awareness. No single point-sized organ has been found. The bottleneck looks like a feature of how distributed processing is coordinated. Global workspace theories describe a limited stage on which one content at a time is broadcast. Critics such as Daniel Dennett reject any single inner place where everything comes together. So the mind as a literal atom has no modern match. It is a philosophical posit, not a measured particle. Why conscious experience feels serial remains an open question.
