The Bond Called Inherence

Meaning · English
That from which the thought arises, 'this is in that,' concerning an effect and its cause: that is inherence.
The question is simple. When we say the cloth is in its threads, or the colour is in the cloth, what links them? Vaisheshika answers with a sixth category, samavaya, inherence: the relation behind the thought 'this is in that'. The sutra names effect and cause, like cloth and the threads it is woven from. Shankara Mishra's commentary widens the list: a quality in a substance, a motion in a body, cowness in a cow, knowing in a self, sound in space. His reasoning runs in steps. A thought of 'here, in this' cannot arise without some relation, so a relation is inferred. It is not samyoga, contact, like curds sitting in a pot. No movement brought these pairs together, they never come apart, and neither exists on its own. The school holds that inherence is inferred rather than seen, and that it is single and eternal. Why doesn't one bond blur everything together? Because what holds what stays fixed. Threads hold cloth, never the reverse.
Picture a sticker on a red apple. The sticker was pressed on and can be peeled off, leaving the apple as it was. The apple's redness cannot be peeled off and laid on the table beside it. The sticker is like contact, a link that began and can end. The redness sitting in the apple is like inherence.
Inherence answers a question that modern ontology, the study of what kinds of thing exist, still argues over: how does a property belong to the thing that has it? Substance-and-attribute views stand close to Vaisheshika. Bundle theories hold that an object just is its properties, with no extra tie. F. H. Bradley pressed a well-known worry about relations: if a relation links two things, what links the relation to them? Holding that inherence is single and needs no further link is one answer to that regress. Whether it works is still open. Physics paints a different picture. A cloth is fibres held by friction and molecular forces, and colour depends on how surfaces reflect light. No measurement finds an extra bond called inherence. That does not settle the matter, because inherence was posited by reasoning about thought and language, not proposed as a physical force.
