Why Weep, Mind?
Avadhuta Gita 5.5
Meaning · English
There is no samadhi of knowing and not knowing. There is no samadhi of place and no-place. There is no samadhi of time and no-time. Why do you weep, my mind? All is the same. There is no pot and no sky within it. There is no body of the living self, and no living self. There is no split into cause and effect. Why do you weep, my mind? Here is the state of freedom, unbroken everywhere, free of thoughts of short and long, with no division of round and angled. Here there is no void and no non-void, no pure and no impure, no all and no not-all. Why do you weep, my mind? All is the same.
Three words carry this. Samadhi is a settled, absorbed state, from sam (together) and a-dha (to place): the mind set down in one place. Sarvasama means same in everything: sarva is all, sama is level or even. Moksha is freedom, from muc, to release. Dattatreya, the avadhuta, begins by taking away the goals a seeker might chase. He says no samadhi depends on knowing or not knowing, on a place or no place, on a time or no time. If freedom needed a particular state in a particular spot at a particular hour, it could be missed. He says it cannot. Then he takes away the usual pictures. The old image of a pot with space inside it, used to explain the self in a body, is dropped: no pot, no enclosed space. No body for the living self, and no separate living self. No cause standing apart from effect. Next he says freedom is already here, running unbroken through everything. It has no long or short, no round or angled. It is not empty, and it is not full. It is not pure, because it is not stained either. Even all and not-all fall away. This answers the weeping mind. The mind cries because it thinks freedom is somewhere else and it is falling short. Dattatreya answers each time that nothing is missing. All is the same.
A man turns the whole house upside down for his glasses, getting more frantic with each room, while they sit on top of his head. The search is the mind's weeping. The glasses are the freedom that was never absent, only overlooked by the one looking.
1. Next time you catch yourself thinking you have not got it right, such as not calm enough, not focused enough, or not at the right place in life, stop for one minute. 2. Sit or stand still and name the thought plainly: the mind is weeping again. 3. Ask what, in this very minute, is actually missing. Look at the room, your hands, your breath. 4. Then go back to what you were doing, and notice whether the chase has loosened even slightly.
A woman sits in her parked car outside a weekend retreat she has just left early. Everyone else seemed to sink into stillness. She sat there tense, counting her failures. Now she feels she has missed something others were given. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, it tells her mind to stop weeping, because no special state was ever the door. Second, it takes away the comparison, since there is no right place, time or condition to have reached. Third, it leaves her with the plain car, the plain afternoon, and what is already present in them. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: straining to be calm usually makes a person more tense. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise the ache of feeling left out will vanish at once. It does not replace care from a doctor or counsellor if her distress is heavy or lasts. It also does not say that practice is worthless. It says only that the weeping mind has misjudged what it lacks.
