Meaning · English

Here the living being is the same in all, unbroken, one and still. Why weep, my mind, when all is the same? Wisdom and folly are both unknowing. Doubt and its absence are both unknowing. If there is only one unbroken awareness, why weep, my mind? There is no place called liberation and no place called bondage. There is no place of merit and none of sin. There is no place of fullness and none of emptiness. Why weep, my mind? If it is the same, free of colour and of colourlessness, free of cause and effect, free of difference and of no-difference, why weep, my mind, when all is the same?

Dattatreya sings this to his own mind, which keeps weeping. The word that carries it is sama, meaning level, even, the same all through. The jiva, the living being, is called sama: the same in every creature, with no seams in it. Bodha is awareness, the plain knowing that lights every experience. The text says this awareness is one and unbroken. Pada means a place to stand or a rank. Here it is denied for liberation, bondage, merit, sin, fullness and emptiness. The self has no address in any of them. Varna means colour, and it is also the word for caste. So the singer says the self has neither colour nor its lack. The verses go through the clauses in turn. First, the being is one and still. Next, even cleverness and foolishness belong to unknowing, since both stand on the idea of split. Then every ladder is taken away: free or bound, good or bad, full or empty. Last, cause and effect, difference and no-difference are set down too. The reason given is the refrain itself. The mind weeps because it believes it has lost something or fallen short. The singer answers that the thing it grieves over was never a place the self stood. What he asks of the mind is to stop keeping that account.

A child fills a notebook page with pencil tallies, circles and crossings-out, and the page gets grubby. Under all of it the paper is the same sheet it was at the start. The marks are the scores and ranks. The paper is the awareness the verses call whole.

1. Tonight, before sleep, take a minute to notice how you have been scoring yourself today: good, bad, behind, ahead. 2. Say each score silently as a plain statement, such as "I was short with him," and notice that you are the one who saw it. 3. When the mind starts to weep over one, ask once, "Who is aware of this?" and rest on that for a few breaths. 4. Do this for a week, at the same hour.

A mother lies awake at three in the morning, replaying a sharp word she said to her son at dinner. The tally starts: good mothers do not snap, she has failed again, she is behind other women. The verses would cut in at the ranking, not the memory. The sharp word happened, and she can say so plainly. But "failed mother" and "good mother" are shelves she has been putting herself on, and the text says the self rests on none of them. What remains is the one who is awake, noticing the replay. From there she can decide one small thing, such as saying sorry at breakfast. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired mind makes its tallies louder at night than they look by day. The verses do not promise that the regret goes away, that the apology will be easy, or that the hurt was nothing. They also do not stand in for a doctor when sleeplessness or low mood goes on for weeks.
