Your breasts, quickly damp, press at the roots of the arms and strain the bodice at its sides, shining like golden pots. To keep your slender waist from breaking, Love bound it, Goddess, in three folds, as with strands of creeper.
Three words carry the picture. Valagna is the waist, the slim middle of the body. Bhanga is breaking, a snapping through. Trivali is the three folds, the three fine lines that cross a slender waist. The poet also uses the word lavali, a slender creeper that is soft but strong enough to bind. The verse first shows the weight. Her breasts are full and shine like golden pots. They are warm and damp, and they press against the roots of the arms and strain the bodice at its sides. The poet praises them as the Mother's, a fullness that is nourishing and abundant. Then he asks what holds that weight up. The waist is very thin, so thin that it seems it might snap. His answer is tender. Love, who is called the body-born one, saw the danger and tied the waist round three times, as a gardener ties a heavy branch with creeper. The three folds are the binding. The verse takes the lines of the waist as the Mother's own protection against breaking, put there by Love himself. Why teach it here? The poet is going down her form, and this is the natural wonder at the waist: how can so slight a middle carry so much? The reply is that she is held together by care. The listener is asked only to see it as the poet does, with wonder and without hurry.
A young branch hangs heavy with fruit, and a gardener ties it to a stake with three loops of soft cord, so it bends but does not snap. The branch is the slender waist, the fruit is the fullness above it, and the three loops are the three folds that keep it whole.
