Meaning · English

Parvati, the Mountain-Lord took weight and breadth from his own slope and set it in you as a gift. So this broad, heavy mass of your hips now covers the whole earth and makes it light.

Three words carry the verse. Nitamba means hip, and also the sloping shoulder of a mountain. One word serves for her body and for the hill. Guru means heavy, weighty, and also worthy of honour, the word used for a teacher. Haraṇa, from the root hṛ, to take or carry, gives the sense of something lifted from one place and handed to another. The poet's picture runs like this. Himavan, the Mountain-Lord and Parvati's father, cut away some weight and spread from his own slope and placed it in his daughter. That is why her hips are broad and heavy. The weight is the mountain's, now in her keeping. The last clause turns it. Her hips are so vast that they cover the whole earth, and beside them the earth is made to seem slight. The mountain was the heaviest thing the earth held. What it gave her outweighs the world. The verse is taught here because the poet has been praising her form downward, part by part, and has reached the hips. They are praised as the Mother's, vast and steady, the support of everything. Weight here means worth and stability, not clumsiness. The text asks the listener to see her greatness as larger than the ground itself.

Stand at the foot of a great cliff and the village behind you shrinks. The cliff blocks the sky, and the houses look like toys. The poet sets the Goddess's bulk against the earth in the same way, so that the world seems small beside her.
