Meaning · English
He reflected: What is it by whose departure I shall depart, and by whose staying I shall stay?
The one reflecting is the Purusha of sixteen parts described in 6.2, not Pippalada or a human. He asks what he must bring forth so that its leaving the body will be his own leaving. He also asks what other being's staying in the body will be his own staying. He is looking for a dependent other whose presence keeps him in the body, and this question leads to his creating prana in 6.4.
A light switch being flipped up and down. The movement of the switch is different in each direction, but the electricity flowing behind the wall is the one thing that makes both the 'on' and 'off' states possible. This electricity maps to the hidden power the speaker is searching for.
