Merging Into the One

Prashna Upanishad 6.5

Meaning · English

Just as rivers lose their names and shapes in the ocean, the sixteen aspects of a person dissolve into the Pure Self, becoming one.

Individual traits and bodily functions are like temporary labels. When a person realizes their true nature, these sixteen separate parts merge into a single reality called the Person. The distinctions between the mind, senses, and elements vanish. By returning to this source, the fragmented identity disappears, leaving behind a state that is whole and no longer subject to death.

Consider a handful of salt stirred into a glass of water. The grains vanish and the salt no longer has a separate shape or name. You simply have saltwater. The salt has not disappeared, but it has merged entirely into the water, losing its individual boundaries.
