Meaning · English

That which cannot be seen or grasped, has no lineage or class, no eyes or ears, no hands or feet; lasting, all-reaching, present everywhere, very subtle, never wearing away. The steady and wise see it as the womb of all beings.

Angiras is describing Brahman, the Indestructible he named a verse earlier, by saying what it is not. Three words carry much of it. Gotra is family line, and varna is class or colour. Denying both says Brahman has no birth, rank or group. Vibhu comes from a root meaning to pervade. It is the all-reaching, with no place where it is absent. Dhira, the wise, are the steady ones, people whose minds do not shake. The text says they see this source, though it has no eyes to be seen with and cannot be grasped. Eyes, ears, hands and feet are the tools of knowing and doing. Brahman has none because it is not one more thing that uses tools. It is also very fine, subtler than anything the senses reach, and it does not wear away. The reason Angiras gives is the last clause: it is the source of all beings. Whatever comes and goes needs something that does not come and go. Shankara reads every negation as pointing to Brahman as the cause, never as one object among objects. He adds that denying eyes and ears means it has no limiting organs, not that it is blind or dull. The listener is asked to look for what stays steady beneath names, families and bodies.

Think of the empty space inside a room. It has no colour, no one can pick it up, and it belongs to no family. Yet every chair, lamp and person stands in it, and the room exists because of it. Brahman, as the text describes it, is like that for all beings: unseen, ungraspable, and present in everything.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes in a room with the lights low. Look at the empty space between you and the far wall. 2. Name quietly what fills it: furniture, air, light, sound. Notice that none of these is the space itself. 3. Then, once today, notice a moment when you are introduced by role, family or title. Ask yourself what is left of you when those labels are set aside, and stay with the question a little before answering.

A retired schoolteacher sits at her own farewell party. People call her Madam, Sharma-ji's wife, the one who ran the school. Tomorrow none of those titles will have a desk to sit behind, and she feels a small drop in her chest. The verse offers her a different question. Angiras tells Saunaka that what is real in a being has no family, no class and no tools of its own, and that the steady see it as the source of all beings. Step by step: she hears each title as a name given to her, not as what she is. She lets the drop pass without arguing with it. She notices that the one who is aware of the loss is still present and unchanged. Ordinary experience agrees that a person feels steadier when she is not wholly defined by one role. The verse does not promise that the sadness of leaving will vanish, or that the days ahead will be easy to fill. It does not replace friends, family, work or a doctor when she needs one. It gives her a place to stand while the titles change.
