Obstacles Within Reach

Yoga Sutras 3.37

Meaning · English

These powers are obstacles when the mind rests in samadhi. When the mind turns outward, in the waking state, they count as accomplishments.

Three words carry the sutra. Te means "these," the powers just listed. Samadhi is the mind gathered fully into one object, from sam (together) and a-dha (to place). Upasarga means something that runs up against you, an obstacle or interruption. Vyutthana is rising out, the mind coming back out into ordinary outward activity. Siddhi is an accomplishment, a thing brought off. So the sutra gives one verdict on the same powers from two standpoints. Seen from samadhi, they get in the way. Seen from the waking world, they are real attainments. Every word is accounted for: the powers, the settled mind, the outward mind, and the two names they earn. Patanjali says it because the preceding sutras describe what each samyama (the three inner steps of holding, steadying and merging, practised together) gives. A student might take those gifts as the goal. The text answers that the goal is the knowledge of the self named in 3.35, and the powers sit to one side of it. Vyasa's commentary reads it this way: the powers arise for a mind in samadhi, but they distract it from the highest insight, while for the outward-turned mind they are true attainments. The commentators generally agree on the sense and differ only in emphasis.

A traveller walking toward a distant town passes a lovely market in the road. For a shopper, the market is the whole trip. For the traveller, every stall is a reason to stop. The powers are the market. The one headed for the town reads them as delay.

1. Tonight, pick one small pleasant thing that tends to pull you off your task, such as a phone notification or a snack. 2. Sit for three minutes with a single plain object, a candle or a cup, and look only at it. 3. When a pull toward something else arises, name it quietly, "a side road," and return to the object. 4. Afterward, notice which pulls were attractive and which were merely noisy. Only notice; do not judge.
