Cumin, the Digester

Bhavaprakasha, Haritakyadi Varga 81

Meaning · English

Jiraka, jarana, ajaji, kana and dirghajiraka, long cumin, are all names of cumin. The three cumins are dry, pungent, hot, kindling to digestion and light. They are binding, they raise pitta, they are good for the intellect, and they cleanse the womb.

Jiraka and jarana both grow from a root meaning to digest, to wear down: cumin is named for what it does. Kana means a small grain, the tiny seed itself. Ajaji is an old name whose origin is uncertain. Dirghajiraka, long cumin, is one more name for the same seed. Then the text gathers the three cumins, the white, black and related kinds it goes on to describe, under one set of qualities. They are dry (ruksha), pungent and hot. They are dipana, kindling agni, the digestive fire, and laghu, light and easy to digest. They are samgrahi, binding, firming the stool. They are pittala, raising pitta, the hot principle behind digestion and metabolism. They are medhya, good for the mind, and they cleanse the womb. The text gives no reason. In this system's terms, dry, hot, light qualities stir a sluggish fire and dry excess moisture, so the same heat can trouble someone who already runs hot. At home cumin is a spice in the dal. The womb teaching is no reason to take it as medicine in pregnancy.

Drop a spoon of cumin into hot ghee. Within seconds the seeds darken, hiss and fill the kitchen with a smell that brings people to the table before the food is served. That small burst of heat and appetite is what the text means by dipana: a seed that wakes the digestive fire rather than feeding it.

Cumin is one of the world's most used seed spices. Its warm smell comes from aromatic oils in the seed, and as food it suits nearly everyone. Agni maps loosely onto digestion and appetite, and the aroma and taste of spices do prompt saliva and digestive juices, so kindling fits everyday experience. Pitta has no exact modern match, though spicy food brings heartburn for some people. Laboratory work and small human trials have looked at cumin for digestion, blood sugar and cholesterol; the findings are early and not firm. Good for the intellect and cleansing the womb have no modern evidence. Concentrated extracts or large medicinal amounts are a different matter from cooking with it and can interact with medicines, so pregnant women and anyone on regular medication should ask a doctor first.
