Mastery of the Middle Breath

Meaning · English
From mastery over samana, the breath that holds the middle of the body in balance, comes a blazing, a shining forth.
Three words carry the sutra. Samana is the even breath: sama means level or equal, an means breath. It is the life-current of the body's centre, where what is taken in is held and balanced. Jaya is mastery, a winning, as when a ground is fully held. Jvalana is blazing, from jval, to burn. The sutra reads plainly: from mastery of the balancing breath comes a blaze. Every word is accounted for, and nothing else is added. Patanjali is working through the powers that follow samyama, the combined holding of attention on one thing. In this run of sutras each of the body's life-currents is taken in turn. This one answers the question of what mastering the central, balancing current gives. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the blaze as a brightness that shows in the body of one who has mastered samana. The commentators follow him and read the result as a shining of the body, not as a fire kindled outside. The text teaches this as one of the powers, offered as a result of samyama and not as a goal.
A banked fire in a stove burns low and uneven until the draught is set right. Then the coals glow evenly and the whole box brightens. Samana is that draught at the body's centre. Mastery of it is the steady draw, and the blazing is the glow that follows.
1. After your next meal, sit upright for three minutes, somewhere quiet. 2. Rest your attention on the middle of your body, around the navel. Notice the breath moving there, and any warmth. 3. Do not try to change the breath. Only notice whether it is even or uneven. 4. Do this once a day for a week and notice when the middle of the body feels settled, and when it does not.
