By samyama on the relation between the ear and akasha, the space in which sound travels, hearing becomes divine.
Three terms carry the sutra. Shrotra is the ear, the power of hearing, from a root meaning to hear. Akasha is space, the open medium that holds and carries sound. Sambandha is a binding together, a relation. Samyama is the three inner steps of holding, steady attention and absorption, practised on one object together. The plain sense: Patanjali says that when samyama is made on how the ear and space are related, hearing becomes divya, of a heavenly kind, beyond its usual range. The object is not a sound. It is the link between the one who hears and the space sound moves through. Why say it here? The chapter has been naming what each samyama gives. This one turns to the senses and to the elements, in this case space. It rests on the earlier teaching that samyama on an object yields direct knowledge of it. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it as follows: space is the support of the ear, and hearing belongs to space, so one who has done samyama on their relation gains hearing that is divine, able to take in sounds that ordinary hearing misses. The later commentators, as far as I can say, follow this reading and add detail about what such hearing reaches.
Think of a drum skin stretched over a frame. The skin and the open air around it are one working pair, and the beat means nothing apart from either. The ear and space are that pair: hearing is not in the ear alone, but in the ear together with the space it listens through.
1. Once today, sit for two minutes somewhere fairly quiet and simply listen. Do not try to name or follow any sound. 2. Notice the room or open air between you and each sound, the gap it crosses to reach you. 3. Notice that you hear more than one thing at once, near and far, and that the listening itself has no edge. 4. Stop after two minutes. Do not try to hear anything unusual. Only notice how hearing and space go together.
