Lightness and Travel Through Space

Yoga Sutras 3.42

Meaning · English

By samyama on the relation between the body and space, and by settling the mind on the lightness of cotton fiber, there is movement through the sky.

Three words carry it. Kaya is the body. Akasha is space, the open room in which things sit and move. Laghu-tula is the lightness of cotton fluff, laghu meaning light and tula meaning cotton. Samapatti is a settling into, the mind taking the shape of what it rests on. Samyama is the three inner steps held together on one object. The sutra reads straight through. Hold samyama on how the body stands in relation to space. Then let the mind settle into the lightness of cotton. From this comes akasha-gamana, going through space. The earlier sutras give the ground: samyama on an object brings knowledge and mastery of it, and 3.41 has already taken up space in connection with hearing. Here Patanjali turns space toward the body's own weight. Vyasa's Bhashya takes it as the yogi gaining mastery of moving through the sky, by first making the body's heaviness negligible. The commentators generally agree on this, and differ mainly on how literally to take the flight. Patanjali gives the means and the result and nothing more. Even the cotton is a means: the mind is asked to become light as it rests there.

A tuft of cotton from a split seed pod drifts across a yard and does not seem to fall. A stone of the same size drops at once. The sutra asks the mind to rest on the cotton until the body is thought of the same way, as something that space holds up.

1. Once today, stand still for one minute and notice how your body sits in the room: the space around your arms, above your head, between your feet. 2. Pick up a feather, a leaf, or a piece of cotton wool and watch it fall or float for a minute. Notice how the mind follows it. 3. Walking later, notice any moment when your steps feel less heavy. Only notice. Do not try to bring it about.
