The Flickering Flame

Mundaka Upanishad 1.2.2

Meaning · English

When the fire has been kindled and the flame begins to waver, the offerer should place his oblations in the space between the two portions of ghee, giving them in faith to the burning fire.

Three words carry the verse. Lelayate means to flicker, to dart and tremble; the flame is alive and unsteady. Ajyabhaga means a portion of ghee, clarified butter, poured in at the start; the verse speaks of two such portions, one on each side of the fire. Ahuti means an oblation, from a root meaning to pour as an offering; it is what is offered. Angiras tells Saunaka that the main offering goes in only once the fire is properly kindled and the flame is moving, and it goes into the gap between the two ghee portions, neither before nor beside them. The reason is that these rites are precise. The previous verse calls the seers' works a path for those who love truth, and a path has a right way to be walked. The listener is asked for care about timing and place, and for steady attention while the flame is still unsettled. Shankara, reading this as the Upanishad's own teaching, takes the verse as one rule of the rite's correct procedure: offerings made in the wrong place or at the wrong moment do not give their promised result.

A cook waits until the oil in the pan shimmers before adding the onions, and drops them in the hot middle, not the cold edge. The shimmering oil is the flickering flame. The rite asks for the same readiness and the same exact placing of what is given.

1. Choose one small daily act you usually rush, such as making tea or lighting a lamp. 2. Before you begin, wait until everything is ready: water boiled, hands dry, space cleared. Notice the moment it is ready. 3. Place the thing you are giving, whether food, water or a flower, in one exact spot, and do it slowly. 4. Do this for one week, and notice whether the act feels different when you do not hurry it.

A cook stands at the stove on a weeknight, wanting dinner done in ten minutes. The pan is not yet hot, so she tips everything in anyway. The food sticks, steams and comes out grey. The next night she waits for the oil to shimmer, places the food where the heat is, and it cooks properly. The verse asks for that same attention in a rite: readiness first, then the offering, put in its exact place. Ordinary experience confirms that rushed work done at the wrong moment tends to go badly, and that a short pause to get ready makes the work steadier. Physiology adds only a small point: slowing down for a few moments settles the body's alertness. The rite's own promise, that a correct offering leads to a good result in the world beyond, is the Upanishad's teaching, and the cook's evening neither tests it nor argues against it. The verse does not promise that careful timing will make a meal good, a day easy, or a worry lighter. It speaks of fire, ghee and offering, and asks for care in them.
