Meaning · English

If someone's fire-offering is never joined by the rites of the new moon and full moon, the four-month rites and the first-harvest rite, if no guest is welcomed, nothing is truly offered, the offering to all the gods is left out, or the rules are ignored, it ruins his seven worlds.

Angiras is describing a rite kept in name only. Agnihotra is the daily fire offering, from agni, fire, and hotra, a pouring into it. Around it the text lists the fortnightly, seasonal and harvest rites, the welcome of guests, and the offering to all the gods, called Vaishvadeva, from vishva, all, and deva, a god. Then comes vidhi, a rule, the proper way of doing it. The plain sense: a fire offering that is missing its companion rites, has no guest honored, goes unoffered, or breaks the rule does not merely fail to help. It destroys the seven worlds of the one who performs it. The reason Angiras gives, following the earlier verses, is that the rites are a path only when done in full and on time. Half-kept, they become a false path. Shaunaka is asked to see that care is part of the act. Shankara reads the seven worlds as the range of results the man might have gained, and reads the verse as warning that incomplete ritual loses them. The same hearer also learns that rites alone are limited, which the text turns to next.

A farmer plants a field, then never waters it, never weeds it, and leaves the gate open to cattle. The seed was good, yet the field ends worse than if he had left it fallow. The rite is the seed; the neglected companion acts and rules are the water, the weeding and the gate.

1. Choose one small daily duty you do, such as making tea, a prayer, or a call to a parent. 2. Today, do it completely, with every usual part, for the few minutes it takes, with your phone put away. 3. If someone comes to the door or the table, stop and greet them properly before you carry on. 4. In the evening, note which part you were tempted to skip.

A woman has kept a morning routine for years: lamp, a few verses, water for the plants. Today she is late, and a neighbor has knocked. She feels the pull to rush the lamp, skip the verses, and wave the neighbor off. The verse would slow her at three points. First, she sees what she is hurrying past, the parts that look small. Second, she greets the neighbor, since the guest is named among the things that must not be dropped. Third, she either does the routine properly or admits she cannot today, rather than going through the motions. Ordinary experience bears out that habits done hollowly tend to lose their meaning, and that rushing past a person tends to sour the day. The old claim about seven worlds belongs to the text's own teaching and is not something a morning can test. The verse does not promise that care will bring ease, relieve the worry behind her lateness, or replace a doctor or a practical fix where one is needed.
