Four Marks of Fitness

Meaning · English

Beauty of form, grace, strength, and a hardness like the diamond: these make up the body's full endowment.

Four words carry the sutra. Rupa is form, the look of a thing. Lavanya is grace or loveliness, the charm that makes form pleasing. Bala is strength. Vajra-samhananatva is the diamond's hardness: samhanana means a close joining of parts, so the body is knit as firm as a diamond. Kaya-sampat closes the line: kaya is the body, sampat is wealth or full endowment. Read whole, the sutra says the body's wealth is these four: fair form, grace, strength, and a compact, unbreakable build. Patanjali gives the list because the previous sutra named the atomic and other powers as the body's endowment, and a reader wants to know what that endowment holds. This sutra answers by naming it plainly. It rests on the mastery of the elements just taught, since the body is made of them. Vyasa's Bhashya takes these as the body's perfections that come with that mastery, and says the body then cannot be harmed by the elements. The commentators agree on the four qualities; they differ little here.

A well-forged iron tool comes from the smith bright, smooth, balanced in the hand, strong in use, and without a flaw or crack in its grain. Those four marks of good making are what the sutra counts as the body's wealth once the elements within it are mastered.

1. Once today, look at your own body as a made thing for two minutes: its form, its movement, its strength, its toughness. 2. Name one of the four that you take for granted, such as a steady walk or a firm grip. 3. Do not try to build any of them tonight. Only notice what already serves you, and write one line about it.
