Meaning · English
From samyama on the senses in their five aspects — their power of taking in, their own nature, their sense of I, their pervasion, and their purpose — comes mastery over the senses.
Key words. Indriya is a sense or organ: the faculties that take in the world and act on it. Jaya is mastery, a winning. Samyama is the three inner steps held together on one object: fixing, steady flow, and absorption. The five aspects are named in order. Grahana is the taking-in, the bare act of the sense meeting its object. Svarupa is its own form, what the sense is in itself. Asmita is the sense of I, the feeling of owning the seeing or hearing. Anvaya is the running-through, the way the three qualities of nature pervade it. Arthavattva is purposiveness: the sense exists to serve the experiencer, for experience and for release. The plain sense: Patanjali says that when samyama is made on each of these five layers of a sense, one after another, mastery over the senses follows. Why he says it: the verses before describe powers over body and elements. The senses are the next thing to bring under control, and they are mastered by understanding them completely, from surface to purpose. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes these as five stages, each one finer than the last, and says mastery comes as samyama is done on each. The commentators agree on the list and its order.
A lamp shade lifted off a lamp shows first the glow on the wall, then the bulb, then the filament, then the current feeding it, then the reason for lighting the room. Each look goes one layer deeper. The senses are known the same way, from the act of taking in down to what they serve.
1. Once today, for two minutes, listen to one ordinary sound, such as a fan or traffic. Notice only the bare hearing, before any name or opinion. 2. Then notice the quiet thought "I am hearing this." Simply see that it is added after the sound. 3. Ask what the hearing is for in that moment: safety, pleasure, habit. Do not try to change it. Only notice.
