The Raised Tongue's Fruits

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 3.38

Meaning · English

Once the tongue has been made to travel upward, if it stays there even for half a moment, the yogi is released from poisons, from sickness, from death, from old age, and from the things that go with them.

The verse begins a list of fruits. Khechari mudra, the seal of the tongue, has been described just before it. Now the Pradipika says what it is worth. Take the words one at a time. Rasana is the tongue, the organ of taste, from rasa, flavour. Urdhvaga means going upward. Khechari, the name of the seal, joins kha, sky or open space, with chari, moving: the one who moves in space. The verse says the tongue is made to go up and is held there, even for half a kshana. Kshana is a moment. The commentary reads it as a word with several senses and takes the measure here as a short but definite span, not a flicker. It also says the upward place is the opening above the palate. Then comes the claim. The practitioner is freed from poisons. The commentary names snake and scorpion venom. He is freed from vyadhi, which the commentary reads as the body's elements falling out of balance. He is freed from death, which it calls the parting of breath from body, and from old age. The commentary adds that "and the rest" covers signs such as wrinkles. The Pradipika teaches this to show why the seal is worth the years it takes. It asks for steady, taught practice and a tongue that has been prepared over months. The old way of preparing it involves cutting, so it is learnt with a teacher and not from a page. These are the text's claims, not promises.

A choir member waits in the wings before a concert, tongue resting lightly against the roof of her mouth, jaw loose, breathing slowly. It is an ordinary settling habit, and singers and speech therapists do pay attention to where the tongue sits. Resting the tongue gently against the palate is a normal posture, and awareness of it can help a person notice a clenched jaw. The verse goes much further, and here modern understanding does not follow. Tongue position has no known effect on venom, and a snakebite or scorpion sting needs emergency medical care. Ageing and death are not things any posture prevents. The claim of freedom from sickness has no support as a general promise. The old idea that a raised tongue touches a hidden opening above the palate has no counterpart in anatomy, and the tradition's own account of why it works, through prana and the nadis, is the tradition's language, not physiology. The cutting that the full practice traditionally involves is a surgical act. Doctors treat a short tongue-fold only for clear medical reasons, and nobody should attempt it alone.
