Avadhuta Gita 6.17

If one is beyond delusion and despair, if beyond doubt and sorrow, if all is one unbroken Shiva, how then "I" and "mine"? Surely right and wrong are destroyed. Surely bondage and release are destroyed. If all is one unbroken Shiva, how can there be a mind of pain and no-pain? There is no sacrificer, no division of the sacrifice, no division of the fire and what is offered. If all is one unbroken Shiva, tell me, how do the fruits of action come about? Surely one is free of sorrow and its absence, free of pride and its absence. If all is one unbroken Shiva, how a mind of craving and dispassion? There is no change of delusion and clarity, no change of greed and freedom from greed. If all is one unbroken Shiva, how a mind of ignorance and discernment?

The song keeps one refrain: all is Shiva, unbroken, and so a list of questions follows. Shiva here means the one reality, the auspicious. Nirantara means without a gap, with nothing between. Moha is delusion, the bewilderment that mistakes one thing for another. Raga is craving, literally the colour a thing puts on the mind, and viraga is that colour gone. Viveka is discernment, from the sense of separating one thing from another. The Avadhuta Gita sings that if there is no gap, nothing is left to hold the pairs apart. First comes the one who has left delusion and sorrow behind: where would an "I" and a "mine" stand? Then the great opposites, right and wrong, bondage and release, pain and its absence. Then ritual: no sacrificer, no portion of the offering, no fire set apart from what it burns. Without those, the question of fruits of action has no ground. Then the inner weather: sorrow and relief, pride and humility, craving and its fading, greed and its lack. Last, even ignorance and discernment are named as a pair. It is taught this way because the usual path treats each pair as a ladder: leave the bad side, climb to the good. The singer shows that the ladder also belongs to the world of two. Even discernment is one half of a pair. The free self stands where neither half is needed. The listener is asked to see how much of the mind's effort is spent choosing sides.

A white sheet on a washing line, lifted by wind, makes ridges and hollows, a bright side and a shaded side. Each has its own look, yet nobody could cut the ridge from the cloth. The pairs are folds; the one unbroken thing they are made of is what the song calls Shiva.

1. Tonight, take ten minutes with paper and write two columns of what moved you today: pleasure and pain, pride and shame, wanting and not wanting. 2. Beside each pair, draw a line joining the two, and note that one came right after the other. 3. Pick one pair and sit with it for two minutes without choosing a side. 4. Notice what is still there, quietly aware, once you stop choosing.

A young cricketer has just been dropped from the district team. Last week he was praised in the tea stall; today he walks home with his kit bag and feels ashamed. By evening he is already planning a comeback, and he feels the pull of wanting it badly. Pride, shame, craving, hope: they arrive one after another like a tide. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, it would show him that the pride of last week and the shame of today are two sides of the same fold, and that the sheet beneath has not moved. Then, instead of hunting for the better side, he could simply watch each feeling rise and pass. He might notice that the one who watches was not praised and is not shamed. The song teaches this as the nature of the free self, in which "I" and "mine" have no foothold. Ordinary experience confirms that a feeling held up and looked at loses some of its grip. The verse does not promise that the disappointment will not hurt, that he will stop wanting to play, or that a bad stretch of low mood needs no one to talk to. If the heaviness lasts for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see.
