This whole gathering of the teaching on Brahman has been told to you, in brief and in full detail. Even the gods find it hard to reach. Again and again I have spoken this knowledge, plainly and with reasons. Knowing it, a person is freed, with doubt destroyed.

Krishna closes the long teaching with a summary of it. Three words carry the weight. Brahmavada is the speech or doctrine (vada) about Brahman, the one reality. Sangraha is a gathering, from grah, to grasp: everything held in one hand. Samsaya is doubt, from a root meaning to hang between two sides, like a scale that will not settle. Krishna says the whole of that doctrine has now been told to Uddhava. He gave it in brief and in full, so Uddhava has both the short form to carry and the long form to understand. Krishna says it is hard to reach even for the gods. Its difficulty lies in the subject, not in the telling. He adds that he has spoken it again and again, and that it is clear and backed by reasons. It does not ask for blind belief. Then comes the promise Krishna makes. A person who truly knows this is freed, and the sign of it is that doubt has been destroyed. This answers what Uddhava came for. He wanted to go with Krishna, and he is leaving with something he can hold when Krishna is gone. The verse asks the listener to take the teaching as finished and usable, to understand it and not merely hear it, and to let it settle the doubts that keep a mind hanging between two sides.

A road map of the whole country fits on one page and shows where every highway runs. A street atlas of the same country takes a shelf. Neither adds land. The map is the brief telling, the atlas the full one, and a traveller who knows both is no longer lost.

1. Tonight, pick one question that keeps returning, such as what you owe someone or what matters most to you. 2. Write your answer in three short lines. Then write it again as a full page, with your reasons. 3. Read both aloud once, slowly. 4. Notice where a doubt still hangs. Mark it, and ask a teacher or an elder about it this week.

A retired teacher wakes at two in the morning. Her husband has started a new medicine, and the doctor gave her a one-page summary and a thick leaflet. She is not sure she understood either. She lies there turning it over. She reads the summary first and gets the plain outline. Then she reads the leaflet for the reasons behind each line. By the end, the reasons fit the outline. The question that was hanging between two answers settles, and she knows what she will do at breakfast. The verse works the same way. Krishna gives the teaching short and long, and he gives it clearly and with reasons. Ordinary experience agrees that a doubt eases when the outline and the detail meet. Here the doubt is about the self and Brahman, which is far larger than a dosage. The verse does not remove illness, grief or the need to ask the doctor in the morning. Where a question needs an expert, it still goes to the expert.
