Keep this question of yours, which I have answered so clearly, safe in your own keeping. It is the old secret of Brahman, and whoever holds it comes to the highest Brahman. And whoever gives it fully to my devotees, to that giver of the gift of Brahman I give myself, by myself.

Three words carry the verse. Guhya means secret, from guh, to cover or hide. It is hidden because it is kept for those ready for it, and the text does not call it false. Brahma is the vast reality the teaching points to, from brh, to grow large. Dayada, in the phrase for the giver, comes from the sense of giving and inheriting: the teacher hands on a legacy. Krishna first asks Uddhava to hold the teaching he has just received, the answer to Uddhava's questions, and calls it old, not newly made. Whoever holds it, he says, comes to the highest Brahman. Then he turns to what happens when it is given away. Anyone who passes it on fully, without holding back or watering it down, to Krishna's devotees, receives Krishna himself. Krishna says he gives himself by himself, so no third party or lesser reward stands between. The commentators read this as the teaching being worth more than any payment for it. The teaching answers Uddhava's request to go with Krishna. Krishna is leaving, and what remains is the teaching, kept and handed on. It asks Uddhava to be a careful keeper and a generous giver.

A farmer sets aside seed grain after harvest. He does not eat it, and he does not lock it away forever. Next spring he gives full sacks to neighbours whose fields are bare. His store is not emptied by this, and the whole valley is sown. Keeping and giving turn out to be one act.

1. Choose one idea from today's reading that you understood clearly. Say it again to yourself in two plain sentences tonight. 2. Within the week, tell it to one person who would want to hear it, such as a friend, a parent or a grown child. Take five minutes and leave nothing out. 3. Afterwards, notice where you stumbled. That spot is the part to read again.

A retired machinist spends his last week at the workshop showing a young apprentice how to set a cutting tool by the sound it makes. Halfway through he stops, because he has never put this into words. He slows down, finds the words, and corrects himself twice. The apprentice learns it, and the old man finds he knows it better than before. Krishna's two requests work the same way. To keep a teaching is to be able to say it plainly, and to give it fully is to say all of it, with no part held back for the sake of looking wise. Ordinary experience confirms that explaining something aloud shows what we have really grasped and what we have only half held. The text says the giver receives Krishna himself. That is its teaching about the reward, and it is not something a conversation at a workbench can check. It does not promise that the listener will understand or take the teaching up. It also does not replace the patient practice a trade or a path needs.
