Frost kills the lotus; your feet are at home on the snow mountain. The lotus sleeps at night; they stay bright through night and its last watch. It holds Lakshmi; they give her to devotees. Mother, is it strange they beat the lotus?
Sanskrit poets usually praise feet by comparing them to a lotus. Here the poet turns the comparison around and says the feet win, then gives three reasons. The first is that the lotus dies when frost falls on it, while her feet live comfortably on the Himalaya, the snow mountain. The second is that the lotus closes and sleeps at night, while her feet are clear and shining all night and even in its last part, just before dawn. The word for this, vishada, means clear, bright, unclouded. The third is about wealth. The lotus is called the best vessel of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, because she is said to sit on it. Her feet do more than hold shri, which means wealth, grace and splendour. They give it away, freely, to samayins. The commentators take that word as the devotees who follow her path. The poet closes with a rhetorical question: what wonder is there if her feet defeat the lotus? The poem is saying that a flower is the best that nature offers for comparison, and it falls short at every point. The lotus is fragile, it sleeps, and it keeps its wealth. Her feet are sturdy, awake and generous. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows how large her feet are by showing how small the best comparison is.
A roadside tea stall pulls down its tin shutter at dusk and stays closed on frosty mornings. Beside it a house keeps its lamp lit all night and hands out food at the door. The stall is the lotus, and the house with its open door is her feet.
