Meaning · English

These rafts, the rituals with their eighteen parts, are fragile, and the action they contain is the lower kind. Fools who prize them as the greatest good go on meeting old age and death again and again.

Three words carry the verse. Plava is a raft or boat, something meant to carry you over water. Karma is action, here the performance of rituals. Shreyas is the highest good, what is finally best for a person, as against what is merely pleasant. The eighteen are the sixteen priests, the sacrificer and his wife, who are needed to perform a full ritual. Angiras tells Saunaka that these rituals are rafts, and weak ones. They are made of parts and effort, and what is made can break. The action in them is called lower because it works through doing and gains a result, and a result is limited. The reason he gives is plain: those who take the raft for the far shore stay in the river. Old age and death keep coming back to them. He asks Saunaka to see the ritual for what it is, a means and not the goal. Shankara reads the verse as saying that ritual action cannot give liberation, because liberation is not produced by work. Only knowledge of Brahman, the whole reality the Upanishad is pointing to, ends the return to death.

A man tests a raft of lashed reeds at the water's edge. It floats him a few yards and then comes apart in the current. If he has decided that the raft is the far bank, he stops trying to reach it. The rituals are the raft, and old age and death are the river.

1. Pick one habit you do for its reward: a daily routine, a favour, a goal you are chasing. Write it on paper. 2. Beside it, write what you hope it finally gives you. Be honest about the answer. 3. Tonight, spend five minutes asking whether that reward lasts, or whether you will need to do the habit again tomorrow. 4. Notice which of your efforts are rafts and which you have mistaken for the shore. Change nothing yet. Only notice.

A man in his late fifties sits in a hospital corridor while his father is examined. For thirty years he has kept up his routines: the morning prayers, the donations, the festivals held exactly on time. Part of him believed that doing everything correctly would keep this corridor away. Now he sees that none of it was ever a promise about his father's body. The verse speaks to that moment. It says these works are rafts and not the shore, so the disappointment is not that the raft failed. It is that he asked it to carry him where it never could. He can keep his practices and let go of the bargain behind them. He can ask what they were for, and turn toward the knowledge the Upanishad names as the real crossing. Ordinary experience bears this out: effort bought with a hidden condition turns to resentment when the condition is not met. The verse does not take away the fear or the grief in that corridor, and it does not replace the doctor's work.
