For the waker, the sound A: when it is meant to be spoken of, its being first stands out, and when it is grasped as a measure, it is the same as reaching, taking in all. For the dreamer, the sound U: when it is known, its rising higher is plainly seen, and when it is grasped as a measure, it has the quality of being both. For the one in deep sleep, the sound M: when it is held as M, the quality of measuring stands out, and when it is grasped as a measure, it has the same quality as melting away.

Three words carry the verses. Apti means reaching or getting, from ap, to attain. Utkarsha means rising above, a lifting up. Laya means melting, the way salt goes into water. Gaudapada takes the three sounds of Om one at a time and pairs each with a state of the self. A goes with the waker. It is the first sound, and it opens every other sound in the mouth, so it reaches everything. The waker's world is likewise first and widest, and it is the one we all share. U goes with the dreamer. It comes after A and stands above it, as the inner world of dream stands finer than the outer. It also lies between the other two, which is the both-ness. Shankara reads it as the middle place. M goes with deep sleep. It closes the sound, as a measure closes a sum, and it is where the sound melts into silence, as the mind melts into sleep. Gaudapada gives two matches for each sound, one from how it is said and one from how it is taken as a measure. He teaches this so that Om is not memorised as a word. Each sound is meant to be recognised as a state the listener already passes through every day. The verses ask for that recognition: to see the likeness between sound and state, so that saying Om carries the whole round of waking, dreaming and sleep.

A house with three levels. The ground floor stands open to the street and is the first place anyone enters. The upper room sits higher and is reached from below. The cellar is where everything is put away and goes quiet. The waker, dreamer and sleeper are those three floors, and A, U and M are the steps from one to the next.

1. Tonight, before sleep, say Om once aloud, slowly, over about eight seconds. 2. Notice three things in your mouth: it opens wide for A, the sound rises and rounds for U, and the lips close for M. 3. Stay in the quiet after M for a few breaths and notice where the sound went. 4. In the morning, as you wake, recall which came first: the room around you, a dream, or only the sense of having slept.

A man wakes at four in the morning with his heart racing from a vivid dream. He lies still and checks: the ceiling is there, the dream is already thinning, and the stretch before it is simply gone. He cannot recall it. He knows only that he slept. The verses give him a way to name what he just crossed. The room he now sees is the waker's ground, the first and widest place. The dream was the higher, finer room. The blank before it was the closing, where things melt away. Seen this way, the racing heart belongs to one room and does not need to colour the other two. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: nobody witnesses deep sleep directly, and we know it only by what it leaves behind, such as rest, or its lack. The verses do not treat broken sleep. If nights are regularly disturbed, or the dreams are frightening and repeated, a doctor is the right person to ask. The verses offer a way of seeing the three states and make no promise about any one night.
