Stained or unstained, never at any time. Surely he is spotless, unmoving, pure. That I am Shiva, the highest truth: how can I bow to that here? There is no choosing between body and no body. Such talk is untrue; what has been done is not the truth. That I am Shiva, the highest truth: how can I bow to that here? He finds, he finds, yet no, no, not at all. Where the rules of metre are, there it is not, no, no. Sunk in one taste, purified by what he has known, the supreme avadhuta speaks out the truth.

Three Sanskrit words carry this. Nirmala means spotless: nir, without, and mala, dirt. Nishchala means unmoving, from chal, to stir. Samarasa means one taste: sama, the same, and rasa, flavour or juice. The avadhuta is one who has shaken off everything, from the root dhu, to shake. The first clause says the self is never stained and never free of stain at some later hour. It was always spotless, still and pure. So nothing needs washing. The refrain asks how he can bow to himself as Shiva, the highest truth. A bow needs two, one who bows and one bowed to. The question carries the teaching. The second clause sets aside the choice between having a body and being without one. The avadhuta calls that choosing untrue. What has been done, the deeds and the life, is not the truth either. Both the body and its absence are ideas laid over the self. The third clause says he finds, and yet he finds nothing. The self is not an object picked up like a coin. Where rules of metre and verse apply, it is not found, because words in measure cannot hold it. Then the singer is named: sunk in one taste, made clean by what he knows, he speaks. The earlier verses asked how a man who is whole could still have worries. This one answers that even the question of body or no body falls away. It asks the listener to stop trying to become clean, and to notice what was never dirty.

A stone at the bottom of a clear stream. Water runs over it, leaves strike it, mud clouds above it for a day. The stone is not made dirty or clean by any of this. The self, in the avadhuta's song, is that stone, and what passes over it is the body, deeds and words.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name three things you did today that you feel good or bad about. 2. After each one, ask quietly: did this change who is watching? 3. Notice that the one who watched the day is the same one who watched yesterday. 4. Rest there for a minute without trying to hold on to it or find words for it.

A nurse sits in her car after a double shift, replaying one dose she gave late. Her mind turns it into a verdict on her: careless, unfit, stained. The verse speaks to that hour. Step one: the facts are separated out. A dose was late, which is something done. Step two: the verdict is seen as a story added afterwards, the kind the avadhuta calls untrue when it is taken as the whole self. Step three: she can still report the error, fix the process and apologise, since deeds do need care. What eases is the belief that the deed has soiled the one who did it. Ordinary experience agrees that exhaustion makes harsh judgments feel like facts. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the mistake smaller, does not remove the duty to answer for it, and does not replace rest, a colleague to talk to, or help if the guilt will not lift.
