Meaning · English
How can there be any sorting here into body and no body, into clinging and letting go? The self is stainless and unmoving, shaped like open sky, and it is its own truth, born with it, needing nothing added. How does anyone find that truth? Where is form, where is formlessness, in it? Where the highest is sky-shaped, how can it become an object to be grasped? It is the swan that never stops flying through the sky, pure in truth and without a stain. So how can it be this or that, bound or unbound, or changed into anything else?
The verse is a run of questions, and each one takes away a hiding place for the mind. Dattatreya sings of the self as gaganakara, sky-shaped: stainless, still, and with nothing to hold on to. Sahaja means born together with you, so the self is not earned or reached. Niranjana means unsmudged, like an eye without soot. Hamsa is the swan, here a bird that flies through the sky without ever landing. He asks how thoughts of body or no body, attachment or detachment, can apply to something like this. Each pair is a way of describing the self, and the self fits neither side. He asks how anyone finds it, since finding means seeing something as an object, and sky cannot be made into an object. Form and formlessness are both descriptions too. He asks where they could sit in it. The last question is about bondage. If the self is always unstained, then bound and free, and the change from one to the other, are words that never touch it. He sings this because a seeker usually carries the old habit of sorting into the search for freedom, and the sorting becomes one more chain. The verse asks the listener to see that the one who is looking cannot be put in a box.
A jar held up to the sky does not catch any sky. Air fills it, and the jar itself sits inside the sky. The mind that tries to hold the self in words like bound or free is the jar, and the self is the sky the jar sits in.
1. Once today, for five minutes, sit near a window or step outside and look at open sky. 2. When a thought arrives, such as I am too attached or I am doing this wrong, notice that it is a label and let it pass without answering it. 3. Look at what stays the same behind the thoughts: the plain fact of being aware. 4. Do not try to hold that awareness. Just notice that nothing needed to be added to it.
A schoolteacher lies awake the night after her retirement party. Her mind keeps sorting: am I still useful or finished, am I clinging to the job or ready to let go. Every answer feels like a verdict on who she is. The verse would change the night in small steps. First she sees that the sorting is going on and that she is watching it. Then she sees that useful and useless, attached and detached, are descriptions her mind is trying on, and the one watching has not changed since the afternoon. Then she stops asking the mind to settle the question, because Dattatreya says no such pair fits the self, which is stainless and sky-like and was never in the sorting. Ordinary experience agrees that a thought comes and goes while the one aware of it stays steady. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the empty mornings ahead less empty, does not settle her pension, and does not replace a doctor if the low mood lasts for weeks.
