All of it is the one reality, pure and without a gap. Then where is the pride of union and separation? Where is essence, where is husk, when everything is whole? All of it is one taintless truth, unbroken as the sky, pure. Then where is attachment, where is detachment? Where is the dye of colour, or its fading, in what is real? The yogi is free of joining and parting. The enjoyer is free of enjoying and not enjoying. So he walks, slowly, slowly, in the joy that is natural to him, a joy the mind can only sketch.
The avadhuta sings in questions, and each question has the same answer: there is nothing left for the pair to stand on. Take the key words first. Kevala means alone, only one. Nirantara means without an interval, with no gap in it. Yoga is joining and viyoga is parting. Sahaja means born with you, natural, not earned. Mandam means slowly. Now the clauses. If all is one reality with no gap, nothing can join to anything, because nothing stands apart to be joined, and nothing can part. So he asks where pride in union could come from. The same goes for essence and husk, for attachment and detachment, for the colour a thing takes and the colour it loses. Each pair needs two things, and he sees only one. The yogi is free of joining and parting. The enjoyer is free of enjoying and of not enjoying. He still eats, sits and walks, but he does not measure himself by gaining or losing. Why teach this here? The earlier songs ask how a free man could be bound by rules or by their opposites. This one answers from the ground up: the pairs are not wrong, they are simply not there for him. Last, he walks slowly, in a joy that is his own nature. The text says the mind only sketches that joy, so words never hold it. The listener is asked to hear the pairs loosen, not to add a new pair, such as pride in being detached.
Pour a cup of water into a pond. For a moment you can point to the cup's water, then you cannot. No seam shows, no joining happened, and nothing can be taken back out as separate. The cup, the joining and the parting were only ways of speaking. The verse says this of the one reality.
1. Choose one ordinary pair today, such as meeting a friend and saying goodbye, or finishing a meal and being hungry again. 2. When the second half arrives, stop for the length of three slow breaths and walk or sit more slowly than usual. 3. Notice whether the sense of gaining or losing is as solid as it first felt. Only notice; do not argue with it. 4. Do this once in the morning and once in the evening, for a week.
A father stands on a railway platform seeing his daughter off to a hostel in another city. The train is late. He feels the parting in his chest, and he also catches himself rehearsing how proud he should look. The verse changes the moment in small steps. First he sees that the feeling of parting and the pride in being brave are two separate stories. Then he lets each stay as it is, without adding a third story about doing it well. Then he walks home slowly instead of hurrying to fill the silence, and the day feels less like a loss to be managed. Ordinary experience confirms that a feeling we stop fighting often loosens on its own. The limit is plain. The verse sings of the free one's view and does not promise that the ache will vanish, that the platform will feel lighter, or that a worried parent needs no one to talk to. If sleeplessness or low mood follows a parting for weeks, a family doctor is the right person to ask.
