Uddhava, my friend, have you taken in this Brahman with a steady mind? Has your delusion gone, and the grief that rose from the mind? Do not give this to the hypocrite, the unbeliever, or the cheat. Do not give it to one who will not listen, who has no devotion, or who has no humility.

Three words carry the first half. Brahma here is the highest reality Krishna has just taught. Moha, from the root muh, to be bewildered, is delusion: taking the passing for the lasting. Shoka is grief, and Krishna calls it manobhava, born of the mind. He treats grief as something the mind produces when it clings, and delusion as the soil it grows in. So Krishna begins by asking his friend two things. Has the teaching settled in you, and has the bewilderment lifted? He asks as a teacher checks whether a lesson has taken root, not whether it was heard. Uddhava came to Krishna afraid of losing him, so grief is the live question. Then comes the restriction. Dambhika is a hypocrite, from dambha, show or pretence. The unbeliever and the cheat follow. Ashushru, from shushrusha, the wish to hear and serve, is one who has no wish to listen. Then the one without devotion, and the one without humility. Krishna names six closed hearers. The teaching is held back from them because it would be used for show or argument, or simply bounce off. The commentators read it as a statement about readiness. The text asks Uddhava to carry the teaching with care.

A jar with its lid screwed tight stands under a running tap. The water runs down its sides and none goes in. The tap is the teaching, and the lid is a hearer who is putting on a show, mocking, or not listening.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you learned today that you value, and tell it to one person who has time and wants to hear it. 2. Before you speak, ask yourself whether you want to be understood or to be admired. Notice which one it is. 3. Next time someone explains something to you, put your phone down and let them finish before you answer. 4. Before sleep, name one worry that came from a story in your head and not from a fact. Note it and leave it there.

A retired schoolteacher is at the kitchen table with her nephew. She is trying to explain why a certain prayer has steadied her through the worst year of her life. He nods, and his eyes keep drifting to his phone. She stops mid-sentence and says only, 'Another time.' The verse gives her a way to see that moment. Krishna asks first whether the listener is ready, and the asking itself is a kindness. It tells her that holding back is not scorn for the nephew. Some things land only when the other person is listening, and forcing them out early spoils them. She can wait, and she can ask him a simple question to find out whether he wants to hear. Ordinary experience agrees that advice given to someone not listening usually makes both people feel worse. The verse promises nothing about the nephew. He may never ask. It does not say grief ends when a teaching is heard. It asks a friend's question: has the bewilderment lifted? Grief that needs care from a doctor, a counsellor or family still needs that care.
