In knowledge, in rites, in yoga, in trade, in holding the rod of rule, whatever people aim at, dear one, I am that much for you, in four ways. When a mortal lays down all his works, offers himself to me, and I wish to favour him, then he reaches deathlessness and becomes fit to share my own being.

Krishna speaks to Uddhava as tata, dear one. He lists the ways people spend their lives: seeking knowledge, performing rites, practising yoga, earning a living, ruling others. Whatever a person is after in these, Krishna says he is that much for them. He calls himself fourfold, and the commentators differ on how the four are counted. The plain point is that every aim, however worldly or holy, gets all its worth from him. The second half turns to one person. Two words matter. Nivedita-atma means a self that has been offered, handed over like a gift laid before someone. Amritatva means deathlessness, from a, not, and mrita, dead. Krishna says that when a mortal puts down all his works and offers himself, and Krishna wishes to favour him, that person reaches deathlessness and becomes fit for oneness with Krishna's own being. The commentators generally take the laying down of works to mean giving up the claim to be their owner, with the works offered to Krishna, not left undone. This answers a worry Uddhava could carry out of the teaching: after so many paths, which one is the real one? Krishna's reply is that they all lead to him, and that the shortest way is giving oneself to him. The listener is asked to see their own work, whatever it is, as already his.

A single tap in a courtyard fills a drinking cup, a washing bucket and a watering can. The vessels differ and each person comes for a different purpose, but the water is one. Every aim a person chases is a vessel, and Krishna is the water that fills each of them.

1. Tomorrow morning, before you start your main task, whether it is cooking, accounts, study or a shift, stop for ten seconds. 2. Say silently, "This work is given to Krishna." 3. Do the task as usual. When your mind jumps to praise or payment, notice it and return to the task. 4. At night, recall one moment when the work felt lighter. Write one line about it.

A woman who runs a small tailoring shop is finishing a wedding order at midnight. Her shoulders ache. Her mind is on whether the family will pay in full and whether they will talk well of her. The stitching has gone crooked twice. Krishna's teaching, as the text gives it, changes the moment in steps. She names the work as her aim, whether it is stitching, earning or standing in the town, and sees it as already his. She offers the night's work to him. Then she returns to the seam in front of her, and the reward loosens its hold on her hands. Ordinary experience confirms that work done with full attention goes better than work done while counting the return. The text's own promise, deathlessness and oneness with Krishna, is a matter of faith and grace, and Krishna ties it to his own wish to favour the person. Offering the work does not pay the rent, mend a tired body or guarantee the order is accepted. Sleep and food still matter, and so does a doctor if the ache is more than tiredness.
