The story · English

The Yavana king saw a figure emerging before him—a man of striking beauty, dark-skinned and dressed in shimmering yellow silk. He wore the Kaustubha gem and a garland of forest flowers, with the Shrivatsa mark upon his chest. His eyes were like reddish lotuses, and he wore glittering Makara earrings. The Yavana king remembered the descriptions given to him by Narada and realized this was none other than Vasudeva. Seeing that the man was unarmed and on foot, he resolved to fight him unarmed as well. When Krishna turned his back and ran, the Yavana began to chase him, wanting to seize him, though he was pursuing someone who is unreachable even by the greatest yogis.

Krishna led the Yavana king far away to a mountain cavern, staying just out of reach, so that at every step the king seemed about to catch him. Along the way, the Yavana shouted insults, telling Krishna that fleeing was beneath the dignity of someone from the Yadu clan. Eventually, Krishna entered the dark depths of the cave. There, the Yavana saw another man lying fast asleep. In his foolishness, the Yavana took this man for Krishna, thinking he had led him all this way and now lay sleeping here like a saint. He stepped forward and kicked the sleeping man hard with his foot.

The man, who had been asleep for a very long time, slowly opened his eyes. He looked around and saw the Yavana king standing there. The moment his angry gaze fell upon the intruder, a fire erupted from his body, and in an instant, the Yavana king was reduced to a pile of ashes. This man was Muchukunda, a great king of the Ikshvaku dynasty and the son of Mandhata. Long ago, at the plea of the gods led by Indra, he had given up his kingdom and the world of men to protect them from the demons. After a long time, the gods released him from those exhausting duties, telling him that everyone he had known had been carried off by time, and offered him any boon except liberation.

Muchukunda had bowed to the gods and lain down in this cave, in a sleep the gods themselves had given him. When Krishna appeared before him, Muchukunda was overwhelmed by the Lord's radiance. He asked who this magnificent being was—whether he was a deity like Surya, Soma, or Indra. Krishna replied that he has countless names and forms across eternity, but in this age, he had appeared in the house of Vasudeva to protect the earth and destroy the demons. He told Muchukunda that he had come to this cave to show him grace, because Muchukunda had prayed to him earnestly long before, and he is always kind to his devotees. Then he offered him any boons he wished.

Muchukunda bowed, realizing he was in the presence of Narayana. He confessed that he had wasted his life chasing power and wealth, only to find it was all a delusion. He asked for no boon but the service of Krishna's feet, and took refuge in him. Krishna praised his clear intellect and granted his prayer. He told Muchukunda that he could now wander the earth with a mind fixed on the Lord; that as a kshatriya he had killed creatures while hunting, and must burn away that sin through austerity, taking shelter in him; and that in his next life, he would be born as a noble Brahmana and attain the final liberation.
