The story · English
After receiving the grace of Krishna, Muchukunda left the cave and stepped out into the world. He looked around and saw that the people and animals were tiny, and he realized that the age of Kali had arrived. With a steady mind and a heart full of faith, he traveled north to the Gandhamadana mountains. There, he reached the Badari ashram, the home of Narayana and Nara, where he spent his time in peaceful meditation, offering his devotion to the Lord while remaining undisturbed by the dualities of the world.
Meanwhile, Krishna returned to the city surrounded by the Yavana forces. He defeated the foreign army, seized their wealth and treasures and had them carried off toward Dwaraka. As the riches and cattle were being led away under Krishna's direction, Jarasandha arrived with twenty-three divisions of his army. Seeing the sudden rush of the enemy, Krishna and Balarama acted as though they were frightened men. They abandoned the vast wealth and fled quickly, running for many miles as if in terror, while the powerful king of Magadha laughed and chased after them in his chariot.
The two reached the heights of a mountain where it rains constantly, called Pravarshana. Jarasandha knew they were hiding on the mountain but could not find their trail, so he set the mountain ablaze from all sides. Krishna and Balarama leaped from the burning slopes, falling far below to the earth. Unseen by the enemy, the two returned to their city of Dwaraka, which is surrounded by the sea. Jarasandha, wrongly believing his rivals had burnt to death, withdrew his great army and went back to Magadha.
The story then shifts to Vidarbha, where King Bhishmaka had five sons and a daughter of extraordinary beauty named Rukmini. Rukmini had heard of Krishna's qualities and beauty, and she decided he was the only husband worthy of her. However, her brother Rukmi wanted her to marry the King of Chedi. Distressed by this, Rukmini sought out a trusted Brahmin and sent him to Dwaraka. The Brahmin found Krishna seated on a golden throne. Krishna came down from it and seated him with honour, and when the Brahmin had eaten and rested, Krishna stroked his feet and asked if he was happy in his spiritual practice, and whether all was well with him and with his king, under whom the people lived happily.
The Brahmin delivered Rukmini's secret message. She told Krishna that her heart belonged to him alone and begged him to rescue her from the Chedi king. She told him that on the day before the wedding there would be a great procession to the family deity, in which the bride would go outside the city to worship the goddess Girija, Ambika; that was when Krishna could take her. She pleaded, 'If I do not receive your grace, I will give up this body, wasted by my vows, and seek you again through a hundred births.' The Brahmin handed these secret words to Krishna, leaving it to the Lord to decide how to bring the princess home.
