The Wedding at Kundina

The story · English

When Krishna heard the message from the princess of Vidarbha, he smiled and took the messenger's hand in his. 'I too have been unable to sleep at night,' Krishna admitted, 'for I know that Rukmi has tried to stop our wedding out of hatred for me.' Determined, Krishna told his charioteer, Daruka, to prepare the chariot immediately. They set out with the swift horses Saibya, Sugriva, Meghapushpa, and Balahaka. Krishna and the Brahman messenger traveled with great speed, crossing the distance to Vidarbha in a single night, driven by a longing to reach the princess.

Meanwhile, the King of Kundina, driven by his love for his son, was preparing to give his daughter to Shishupala. The city was transformed for the festivities; the streets and crossroads were decorated with colorful flags, banners, and arches. The air was thick with the scent of incense and garlands. The King performed sacred rites for his ancestors and the gods, and fed the Brahmans according to the law. The bride, beautifully dressed in fine silks and jewels, underwent rituals of protection and purification performed by the priests and experts in Atharva Veda to appease the planets.

As the wedding preparations continued, various kings of Shishupala's party arrived, including Salva, Jarasandha, Dantavakra, Viduratha and Paundraka. They had come in thousands, enemies of Krishna and Balarāma, to make sure the princess went to Shishupala and, if Krishna attempted to take her, to fight him and his Yadava companions. Balarāma, hearing that Krishna had gone alone to claim the bride, feared a conflict. Overcome by brotherly love, he hurried toward Kundina with a vast army of elephants, horses, and chariots to ensure Krishna's safety.

In the palace, Rukmini waited in agony. She worried that her wedding was only a night away and Krishna had still not come; nor had the messenger returned. 'Perhaps Krishna saw some fault in me,' she thought, her eyes filling with tears. But then she saw the Brahman messenger arrive, looking cheerful. He brought her the news that Krishna had arrived, and told her of Krishna's promise to take her. Overjoyed, and having nothing dear enough to give him, Rukmini bowed to the Brahman. The King of Vidarbha, hearing that Balarāma and Krishna had come, welcomed them with music, gifts and lodging, while the citizens of the city praised Krishna, saying that only he was a fitting husband for the virtuous Rukmini.

Rukmini visited the temple of Goddess Bhavani, praying for Krishna to be her husband. Then, adorned with a jewelled girdle and tinkling anklets, she came out of the temple holding a maid's hand and walked slowly, like a graceful swan, toward where Krishna waited. Her beauty was so dazzling that the rival kings were mesmerized, their weapons falling from their hands in a daze. Seizing the moment, Krishna swept her up into his chariot and drove away. The rival kings, including Jarasandha, were left behind in shame, crying 'fie on us': their glory as archers had been taken by cowherds, as a lion's glory might be taken by deer.
