The story · English
The battle began with a thunderous roar. The opposing armies charged, their warriors mounted on horses, elephants, and chariots, arrows notched and ready. The Yadava commanders stood facing them, twanging their bows, while the enemy rained shafts upon the Yadavas like clouds pouring rain on mountains. Amidst the chaos, Rukmini, slender of waist, watched in terror, her eyes wide with fear as she saw her husband's army overwhelmed by a storm of arrows. Krishna looked at her and smiled, his voice calming her panic. 'Do not be afraid,' he told her. 'Your own soldiers will destroy this enemy army at once.'
The Yadavas fought with devastating power. Heroes led by Gada and Sankarshana, unable to bear the enemy's show of force, loosed iron arrows that cut down horses, elephants and chariots. The ground became littered with the heads of horses, elephants, and men, along with millions of fallen crowns and armor. Seeing their forces decimated by the Vrishnis, the kings who had come to support Sisupala turned away from the battle, with Jarasandha at their head. They found Sisupala himself looking hollow and drained, his face withered and his spirit broken. His allies tried to comfort him, telling him to let go of his grief, for in this world, neither pleasure nor pain is permanent.
Jarasandha reminded him that Krishna had defeated him seventeen times when he came with twenty-three armies, and that he had won only the last battle; yet he neither grieved nor rejoiced, for time and fate drive the world. He noted that they too had now been defeated by the Yadavas under Krishna's protection. 'We are defeated now because time is against us,' he reasoned, 'but when the wheel of time turns again, we shall be victorious.' While Sisupala and the other defeated kings returned to their own cities, Rukmin, the brother of Rukmini, remained consumed by rage. He gathered a massive army and pursued Krishna, vowing to the assembly of kings that he would never enter the city of Kundina again until he had slain Krishna in battle and brought Rukmini back.
Rukmin launched a fierce assault, firing three arrows at Krishna and mocking him as a thief. 'Stay a moment, you disgrace of the Yadu clan!' he shouted. 'I will destroy your pride today. Release the girl before you lie dead from my arrows.' Krishna only smiled. He cut Rukmin's bow and pierced him with six arrows, then struck his four horses, his charioteer and his flag. Rukmin took up another bow and hit Krishna with five arrows, but Krishna cut that bow, and the next. Rukmin fought back with everything he had—swords, spears, and shields—but Krishna shattered every weapon. In a final fit of rage, Rukmin leapt from his chariot with a sword, charging like a moth into a flame.
Krishna cut Rukmin's sword and shield to pieces with his arrows and raised his own sword to kill him. Rukmini threw herself at Krishna's feet, pleading for her brother's life. Krishna spared him; instead he bound Rukmin with cloth and shaved off patches of his beard and hair, disfiguring him. Balarama freed him and scolded Krishna for the shameful deed, then consoled Rukmini: the one Self in all beings only seems many, like light or sky, and birth and death touch it no more than phases touch the moon. Rukmini gave up her grief. Rukmin, humbled and broken, founded the city of Bhojakata to live in, keeping his vow. Krishna then brought Rukmini to Dvaraka and married her with full rites. The people celebrated with music, garlands, and lanterns, and kings and princesses marvelled to hear her abduction sung everywhere.
