Long ago, Kama, the god of love, was burnt to ashes by the third eye of Rudra. To regain a physical form, he was reborn as the son of Krishna and the princess of Vidarbha. This child was named Pradyumna, and he was in no way inferior to his father. However, the demon Shambara, who feared the boy, kidnapped Pradyumna when he was not yet ten days old. Seeking to eliminate his enemy forever, Shambara carried the infant away and cast him into the depths of the ocean. There, a powerful fish swallowed the child. Eventually, that fish was caught in a great net by fishermen, who brought the catch to Shambara’s court. A cook, while preparing the fish, was astonished to find a living baby inside its belly.

The cook informed Mayavati of the discovery. Narada appeared and explained the truth to the worried woman: this child was the son of Krishna and the incarnation of Kama. Mayavati, who was actually Rati, the wife of Kama, had been waiting for her husband to be reborn. Shambara had appointed her to oversee the kitchen, and upon seeing the infant, her heart filled with maternal love. She raised the boy. As Pradyumna grew into a handsome youth with long arms and lotus-petal eyes, he became the center of attention for all the women who saw him. Rati, knowing him to be her husband, approached him with love, gazing at him with a bashful smile and raised brows.

Pradyumna noticed her gaze and told her, 'You are my mother; why do you behave like a woman in love?' Rati replied, 'You are the son of Narayana, stolen from your home by Shambara. I am Rati, your appointed wife, and you are Kama, my lord. Shambara threw you into the sea, and you were saved from a fish's belly. Kill this formidable enemy of yours, a master of hundreds of illusions. Your mother, Rukmini, still weeps for you in deep sorrow.' Having said this, Rati taught Pradyumna the Mahamaya—the great magical science that could destroy all illusions. Armed with this knowledge, Pradyumna challenged Shambara to a duel. The battle was fierce; Shambara, enraged and red-eyed, struck out with his mace. Pradyumna knocked Shambara's mace aside with his own and angrily hurled his mace back at him.

Shambara rose into the sky using the Daitya magic taught by the demon Maya and unleashed a rain of weapons. Bound by this storm, Pradyumna employed the Mahavidya to shatter the demon's magic. Shambara then loosed hundreds of Guhyaka, Gandharva, Pishacha, serpent and Rakshasa illusions, but Pradyumna scattered them all. Finally, raising his sharp sword, Pradyumna with a powerful surge of strength severed Shambara's head from his body, along with his crown and earrings. As the gods showered flowers upon him, his wife Rati, who could travel through the sky, carried him through the air to the city. Like a dark cloud with its lightning, he descended from the sky with his wife into the inner apartments of his father's palace in Dwarka, where the women gathered.

The women of the palace, seeing a youth with dark skin, golden silk clothes, and a charming smile, mistook him for Krishna and hid in shyness, then slowly saw the difference and came forward in delight. Rukmini, seeing the youth, remembered her own lost son, and milk flowed from her breasts out of love. She wondered if he could be the child stolen from her nursery, for his laughter and gait were exactly like Krishna's. Krishna came with Devaki and Vasudeva and, though he knew the truth, stayed silent; Narada told the whole story, from Shambara's theft of the child onward. Joy erupted throughout Dwarka as Devaki and Vasudeva embraced their grandson. It was no wonder that even his mothers felt drawn to him: he looked like their lord Krishna, the abode of Lakshmi, and was Kama himself, so other women were drawn to him all the more.
