Meaning · English
Her foot gives wealth to the poor without pause, as generous as their hope, and lavishly scatters the honey of beauty. Her foot is lovely as a cluster of mandara blossoms. May my mind, whose feet are the senses, sink into it and become a six-footed bee.
Three words carry the verse. Makaranda is flower-nectar, the honey a blossom holds. Here it is the honey of beauty, saundarya, streaming from her foot. Karanacarana means "whose feet are the senses." The word karana is an instrument of knowing or acting, and the mind of the poet walks on them, reaching out through eye, ear and touch. Shatcarana, "six-footed," is the ordinary Sanskrit word for a bee. The first half praises the foot. It gives wealth to the poor, shri, all the time and in the measure of their hope. It also scatters the honey of beauty in abundance. The foot is likened to a cluster of mandara flowers, a blossom of the heavenly tree. The second half is the poet's wish. His own mind, which usually runs off on its senses, is to dive into that foot, as a bee dives into a flower, and take on the bee's six feet. Its restless walking becomes a single settling. The poet is answering a question the earlier verses leave open. If her feet give so freely, what is he to do but go to them? His answer is to ask that the mind itself become the bee. Lakshmidhara, the classic commentator, reads the wealth of the poor as wealth of every kind, which she gives to those who ask. The verse asks nothing of the reader. It shows the poet's own wish, and how he sees her foot.
A bee in a garden crosses the air for a while, then drops into a flower and stops moving, its legs gripping the petals while it drinks. The restless mind is the bee, its senses are its legs, and the flower is her foot, where it finally settles.
