Meaning · English
Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and Ishvara have become the frame of your couch. Shiva, clear and bright, is the covering spread over it. Your rays fall on him and redden him, and he seems love itself in a body, a wonder to the eyes.
Three words carry it. Mancha is a couch, a bed with a frame. Svaccha is clear and clean, from a root for bright, so Shiva is pictured as a pure white surface. Shringara is love, the first of the classical moods of Sanskrit poetry. The hymn says it takes bodily shape. The poet first names four great gods: Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and Ishvara. The hymn pictures them as her couch, the posts and frame that bear her weight. Shiva is the clear covering laid over the top. The poet gives him this place so that the Mother's rank is plain. Those who make, keep and withdraw the world serve her as furniture. Then the colour changes. Her rays fall on Shiva's white and he turns red. The poet says he looks like the mood of love made flesh, and the sight is a marvel to those who see it. Shiva's redness is her glow shown on him. The poet teaches this to say who stands where. She is the source of the light and Shiva is the surface that shows it. The gods are not slighted. The poem praises her by showing how high she is, and the listener is asked to see that height.
A plain white sheet hangs in a window at dawn. When the low sun reaches it, the cloth turns rose, though the sheet itself has not changed. Shiva is the white cloth, her glow is the sunrise, and the colour he wears is hers.
