Soft and Firm Mercy

Meaning · English

Rough in the hair, simple and soft in her gentle smile; tender as the shirisha flower in the heart, hard as a stone slab at the breasts; slender at the waist, broad and heavy at the hips. Such is the red mercy of Shambhu's Goddess, guarding the world.

The verse lists opposites in her, one after another, and ends by calling all of it karuna, mercy. Three words carry it. Arala means curved, curly, even rough: her hair is dark and wavy, not smooth. Prakritisarala means simple by nature: her smile is without guile. Aruna means red, the colour of dawn, and here it colours her compassion. The pairs run down the body. Hair is wavy, yet the smile is straight and open. The heart is soft like the shirisha, a flower so delicate it bruises at a touch, yet the breasts are praised as firm as a polished stone slab. The waist is very slender, while the hips are wide and strong. The poet is not cataloguing parts. He is saying that one mercy holds tenderness and strength together, because the world needs both from a protector. The Goddess is shown as Shambhu's mercy, the compassion of Shiva made into a person. Lakshmidhara reads the redness as the dawn-colour of her grace, the light before day. The text teaches that she protects the world, and that her protection is neither only soft nor only hard. It asks nothing of the listener except to see her whole, with the praise the hymn gives her.

A mother carrying a child across a river holds the child close with a soft lap and a tender voice, yet her arms are rigid as a rail and her feet are planted on stone. Both are one act of care. So the poet sees the Goddess: gentleness and firmness are a single mercy.
