Meaning · English
The dark mark on the moon is musk. The watery disc of the moon is an emerald casket, packed with camphor, which is its phases. Your daily enjoyment leaves its hollow empty, and Brahma, surely for your sake, fills it again and again.
The poet looks at the moon and sees a dressing-box in the Goddess's rooms. He takes the parts one at a time. The kalanka is the dark stain on the moon's face, and he calls it musk, a dark, costly perfume. The moon's round disc is a karanda, a casket, and he calls it watery and green like an emerald. The kala are the moon's phases, each a sliver of light, and he calls them camphor, the white substance packed inside. Together they make a jewelled box full of perfumes. The poet then explains the moon's waxing and waning from this picture. The Goddess uses what is in the box every day, so the box empties. Brahma, the maker, packs it full again, and he does it over and over. The poet adds that he does it for her. Nothing in the moon belongs to the moon. The commentators read the verse as praise of how much she is served, with the maker himself working as her attendant. The teaching is about ownership. The moon is bright, and the poet says its brightness is a store kept for her use. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It gives a way of seeing the night sky.
A grandmother's spice tin sits on the kitchen shelf. She uses it every day, and someone quietly tops it up before it runs dry. The tin never seems to belong to itself. The moon is the tin, her use is the daily emptying, and Brahma is the one who refills it.
