You are the inner chamber of Shiva, foe of the three cities. So worship of your feet is hard for restless senses to win. Indra and the gods, waiting at your door, have been led to matchless powers, anima and the rest.

Three words carry the verse. Antahpura is the inner chamber, the private rooms deep in a palace where only the nearest are admitted. Purarati, 'enemy of the three cities', names Shiva as the one who burned Tripura. Taralakarana means restless senses: tarala is trembling, unsteady, like a leaf that cannot hold still. Anima, from anu, atom, is the first of eight powers, the power to become infinitely small. The poet first says that she is Shiva's inner chamber. A court is open to many, but a ruler's inner rooms are not. Because she is that private place of Shiva, her feet cannot be worshipped easily. The text puts the difficulty in the senses, which keep darting outward, and not in any stinginess on her part. Then comes the evidence. Indra, chief of the gods, and the other gods stand only near her doorway. The powers beginning with anima wait at that same threshold, and through those powers the gods have been brought to an attainment nothing else matches. So the powers are shown as doorkeepers, standing at her entrance. The greatest gods are served by them and remain outside. The poet is answering how high her place is. The hymn's answer is that what heaven counts as its highest gift is only what her door attendants hold. It asks the listener to notice where the powers stand: at the door, not in the room.

A great house has a gatehouse, and the guards there hold the keys, the lamps and the visitors' book. Important guests may wait beside them a long while. The family's own rooms lie past that gate. The gods and the powers are the gatehouse and its guests, and she is the room within.
