Faithful Only to Shiva

Meaning · English

Many poets serve the wife of Brahma, and many gods wed Lakshmi, whom any wealth can win. But you, faithful one, leaving Mahadeva aside, are never last among faithful wives. Your embrace is hard to come by even for the kuravaka tree.

The poet sets her beside the other goddesses. Kalatra means wife, the one who holds a household up. The wife of Brahma is Sarasvati, speech, and many poets serve her. Lakshmi, called Sri, is wedded to whoever has some riches, so in the poet's picture she goes where wealth goes. Then he turns to the Goddess. Sati means a wife true to her husband, from sat, what is real and steady. He says she is never last among such women, and that apart from Mahadeva, the great god Shiva, no one has her. Last comes the kuravaka tree. Old poets say it flowers when a woman embraces it, so it is the one tree that is never refused. Even it cannot have her. The poet is saying her devotion to Shiva has no gap in it, not for beauty, not for blossom. The teaching answers a question the hymn has been circling: how can she be Mother to all gods and still belong to one? The poet's reply is that she is the faithful one, and that her wholeness lies in this. He praises her body here only as hers, kept for Shiva. The commentators do not treat it as a slight on the other goddesses. It is a measure of how single her love is.

A compass needle shivers and swings when it is carried through a crowded room, passing iron, keys and coins. Yet it settles on one direction every time. The many others are the things that can pull; her fixed devotion to Shiva is the north the needle always finds.
