Dust of Her Feet

Meaning · English

Brahma gathers one tiny speck of dust, born from the lotus of your feet, and shapes the worlds from it without flaw. Vishnu somehow carries it on his thousand heads. Hara grinds it fine and wears it as ash smeared on his body.

Three words carry the picture. Pamsu is dust, and the poet calls it tanIyamsam, the very smallest speck. Caranapankeruha is the lotus of the feet. Pankeruha means 'growing in mud', which is the lotus, so her feet are a lotus and the dust is what falls from it. Bhasita is ash, the grey powder Shiva is pictured wearing. The poet then gives each great god a task with this one speck. Brahma collects it and makes the worlds out of it, with nothing missing. Vishnu carries it, and the poet says 'somehow', as if the weight strains even a thousand heads. Hara crushes it finer still and rubs it over his body as ash. So the making, the bearing and the grinding all work on the same grain of her. The poet teaches this right after saying that even the gods cannot act without her. Now the claim has a picture: what the three greatest gods handle is a trace of her feet. He praises her by making her feet's dust the raw material of everything. The verse asks the listener only to take in how large she is and how small the gods' task looks beside her.

Picture a pinch of fine soil from a riverbank. A potter turns it into rows of pots. A porter strains under the load of it. A mason grinds it into powder. The pinch is tiny, yet three skilled workers are busy with it. The three great gods stand in those places, and her feet's dust is the pinch.
