Meaning · English
For the unknowing, your feet's dust is a sun-city in inner darkness; for the dull, honey streaming from blossoms of awareness; for the poor, a string of wish-jewels; for the drowned in birth's ocean, the tusk of Vishnu's Boar.
The poet names four kinds of lack and gives each its own cure. Four words carry it. Avidya is not-knowing, the missing light by which a thing is seen as it is. Jada means dull or inert, a mind that does not stir. Cintamani is the wish-jewel of old tales, a stone that yields whatever is thought of. Damshtra is a tusk. The text pictures the Goddess's foot-dust four ways. For those in avidya, it is a city of the sun, where it is always noon, so the darkness inside has no place left. For the jada, it is a stream of honey running from a cluster of blossoms, and the blossoms are caitanya, awareness itself. Dullness is met by sweetness, not scolding. For the poor, it is a string of wish-jewels, so want has nothing to hold on to. For those sunk in the ocean of birth and death, it is the tusk of Vishnu when he took the form of the Boar. In the old story that tusk lifted the drowned earth out of the water. This is why it comes here. Verse 2 said the dust makes and carries the worlds. The poet now asks what such dust does for one person who is ignorant, dull, poor or drowning. The commentators read the four as the whole range of human want. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see how much the Goddess holds.
A ring holds four keys, each cut for a different lock: a shed, a front door, a strongbox, a gate. Nobody asks which key is greater. Ignorance, dullness, poverty and the round of rebirth are four locks, and the poet says one ring, the Goddess's foot-dust, opens every one.
