Meaning · English
Vishnu worshipped you, who give good fortune to those who bow, and once took a woman's form, and so stirred even Shiva, enemy of the three cities. Kama, too, bowed to you. With a body that Rati's eyes drink in, he can bewilder even great sages.
The poet gives two examples of what her grace does, one of Vishnu and one of Kama. The key words come first. Saubhagya means good fortune, from su, good, and bhaga, share. She is the giver of a good share to those who bow. Kshobha means a stirring, as when a still pond is disturbed. Moha means bewilderment, a clouding of the mind. Now the clauses. Vishnu worshipped her, and the poet says that is how he once became a woman and stirred Shiva, the destroyer of the three cities, whom nothing usually moves. Kama, the god of desire, also bowed to her. The poet describes his body as something Rati, his wife, drinks in with her eyes. With that body he can cloud the minds of sages who have mastered themselves. The poet's reasoning sits in the small word meaning indeed. Neither Vishnu's form nor Kama's beauty works by its own force. Each works because they first bowed to her. The poet is answering a question the earlier verses raise. If her feet are the true refuge, why do the other gods seem so powerful? His reply is that their power is a share she gave. The text teaches that the grace behind all stirring and all charm is hers. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows where the gods' own strength comes from.
A small mirror held in the sun throws a bright spot on a wall, and the spot is so dazzling that people stop and stare at it. The mirror has no light of its own. Vishnu's disguise and Kama's beauty are the bright spot, and her grace is the sun.
