Meaning · English

His bow is made of flowers, its string a line of bees, his arrows five. Spring is his minister, the breeze from Malaya his war-chariot. Yet Kama, bodiless, alone, wins this whole world, daughter of the snow mountain, having won one slight sidelong favour from your glance.

The poet lists the weapons of Kama, the god of desire. His bow is of flowers. Its string is a row of bees, which is what the word for the string, maurvi, is made into here by the poet's wording, madhukaramayi, made of bees. He has five arrows, pancha vishikhah. His counsellor is Vasanta, spring, and his chariot is the sandalwood-scented wind from the Malaya hills. Nothing in this army looks like an army. Then comes the turn, tathapi, 'and yet'. This one god, anangah, 'without a body', a name that recalls his burning by Shiva, conquers the entire world. The poet says how: kripa, grace, from the corner of her eye, apanga. A glance from the side is the smallest look there is. The word kamapi, 'some' or 'a certain', says the favour is too slight to measure. Himagirisute, 'daughter of the snow mountain', names her as Parvati. The poet's reasoning is that Kama has no strength of his own. The flowers, bees and breeze are only the scenery of his reach, and the power in them is hers. The poet shows who stands behind the god of desire. This is praise, and it asks the listener to notice that what moves the world is far greater than its gentle appearance. Lakshmidhara, in his commentary, reads this as showing that the Goddess is the source of Kama's power.

A small boy in a paper crown walks into a crowded hall and the whole room goes quiet, because his mother stands unseen in the doorway behind him. The crown and toy sword are Kama's flowers and bees. The mother's look is her sidelong glance, and the quiet is the world giving way.
