Meaning · English
In the middle of a sea of nectar, on an island of jewels ringed by wish-granting trees and groves of nipa blossom, in a house of thought-gems, on a couch shaped like Shiva, you lie beside Paramashiva. A few fortunate ones worship you, a wave of awareness and bliss.
The poet describes where the Goddess lives, from the outside in. First comes a sea of nectar. In it is manidvipa, the jewel island, from mani, jewel, and dvipa, island. Around it stand wish-trees and nipa groves. At the centre is a house built of cintamani, the thought-gem, which gives whatever is thought of. Inside is a couch, and the couch is itself shaped like Shiva. She rests there beside Paramashiva, the highest Shiva. Each ring is richer than the last, and all of it surrounds one place of rest. The last line turns to the worshipper. Only a few, katicana, are called dhanya, fortunate, because they honour her. The poet names her cidanandalahari: cit is awareness, ananda is bliss, lahari is a wave. She is not only a figure on a couch. She is awareness rising as joy. The verse answers a question the hymn has been raising: where does this power rest, and what is she to Shiva? The poet's answer is that she rests with him, on him, and is his joy. Lakshmidhara and the other commentators also read the island as an inner place, which fits the verses that follow. The text itself gives only the picture and the praise.
Think of walking into a great temple. You pass the outer gate, then a wide courtyard, then a pillared porch, and last a small sanctum with one lamp. Every stage is lovelier and quieter than the one before. The jewel island works the same way: the settings narrow until only she is left, resting.
