Meaning · English

Earth at the root-support, water at the jewel-city, fire at her own dwelling-place, wind in the heart, sky above, and mind between the brows: all of it pierced, the family path, you sport in secret with your lord in the thousand-petalled lotus.

Three words carry the verse. Muladhara is the root-support, from mula, root, and adhara, support. It is the lowest place, and the verse gives it earth. Manipura, the jewel-city, takes water. The poet writes the word for water as kam, which can also mean simply 'some', so the line reads as 'some wonder' as well. Svadhisthana, her own dwelling-place, takes fire. Then come wind in the heart, sky above it, and mind between the brows. Sahasrara is the thousand-petalled lotus at the crown. The plain sense is a climb. The text pictures the Goddess passing upward through the elements, one after another, and piercing the whole kula path, the way of her own family or line, as she goes. She does not stop at any of them. At the top she is alone with her lord, Shiva, and the poet calls her play with him secret. This verse comes in a hymn that has already said Shiva can act only when joined with Shakti. Here the poet shows where they join. Body, breath and mind are laid out as stations, and she is the one who crosses them all. The poet addresses her directly and describes what she does. He gives no instruction for the listener to follow.

A needle draws thread through a row of beads laid out on a table, earth-brown first, then one after another, until the thread comes out the far end and the whole row hangs from it. She is the needle and thread, and the beads are the levels she passes through.
