Hanuman left the rough slopes of Rishyamuka and hurried to the Malaya hill, where his king was waiting. "Rama has come, with Lakshmana," he told Sugriva. "He is the son of King Dasharatha, the pride of Ikshvaku's line, and no army could shake his courage. He keeps to his duty and obeys his father's word. His father pleased the Fire-God with great rites, freed a million cows, gave richly to the priests, and ruled the land known for truth and self-control. Because of a woman's scheming, this son was sent to live in the forest. There he lived like a hermit, and there the fierce Ravana stole his wife. Now he comes to you for help, my lord. Give these two great men every honour."
Sugriva listened, and warm feeling rose in him. His face lit with joy, and he turned to Rama. "Prince, you were raised in duty and you care for everyone. Hanuman has told me truly what kind of man you are. I count it my greatest honour that you would come looking for a friend among the vanaras. If you want me as your true ally, take this hand, and let us make a bond that neither of us will ever break." Rama was filled with gladness. He took Sugriva's hand, pressed it, and held his new friend close. Hanuman put off his wanderer's disguise and took his own form. Rubbing wood against wood, he kindled a fire, set it between the two, and honoured it with flowers.
Slowly and reverently, the two friends walked around the blazing fire. Bound now to each other, they could not stop looking at one another. "You are the friend of my soul," Sugriva said. "Your joys and troubles are mine now." He tore a flowering branch from a tall Sal tree and spread it as a seat for Rama and himself, and Hanuman gave Lakshmana a branch of sandalwood to sit on. Then Sugriva, his eyes still bright with wonder, spoke. "Rama, I live here in fear and grief, driven out by my enemies. My wife has been taken from me. I hide in this forest stronghold or wander far off in terror. My brother Vali has wronged me for a long time. Free me from this. It is a task worthy of you."
Rama, who knew every duty and had no guile in him, smiled gently. "Those who come to me as friends are never let down. Vali, the enemy who took your wife, will die by my hand. These arrows flash like the sun, feathered from the heron, swift and sure, sharp as the thunderbolt of the lord of the sky. They will hiss and strike your enemy like angry snakes. Today you will see him lie like a broken mountain." Sugriva's heart leapt. "Then by your grace I will win back my kingdom and my wife. Hold back my elder brother's strength, so he can never harm me again." That league would bring joy to some and ruin to others. Far away, Sita's left eye throbbed, and she took it as a good sign. Vali's left eye throbbed with doom. The demons felt it too, and knew dread was coming.
His hope restored, Sugriva spoke again. "Hanuman has told me why you came to the forest, how Sita, Janaka's daughter, was carried off weeping by a demon, and how he killed the vulture king who tried to guard her. Do not grieve, Prince. Whether she is in heaven or in the depths below, I will track her and bring her back. Whoever holds her will find her a bitter prize, like a reckless child who eats poisoned sweets. And listen. I believe I saw her. Ravana was carrying her through the clouds, and she was twisting in his grip, crying out your name and Lakshmana's. She saw me on a hilltop with two companions. She threw down her outer garment and her anklets. We found them and kept them all. I will bring them, and you may know them."
"Bring them quickly," Rama said. "Don't wait a moment." Sugriva went into a cave in the mountainside and came back with the precious things. "Look," he said, "this garment, and these golden ornaments," and he placed them in Rama's hands. Rama's eyes clouded with tears, like the moon behind mist. Grief for his wife broke him, his strength left him, and he fell, crying, "Oh, my own." Again and again he pressed the robe and jewels to his chest, breathing hard like an angry serpent. At last he turned to his brother, weeping. "Look, Lakshmana. These are what she wore. She dropped them while the demon carried her off. They must have fallen on soft green grass, because they are still clean and lovely."
Lakshmana answered him quietly. "I don't know these bracelets or these earrings. But I served at her feet for many years, and I know these anklets." Rama turned to Sugriva. "Tell me which way the demon flew with my wife, who is dearer to me than life. Tell me where he lives, the cause of all my grief. For his crime, every one of his kind will fall by my hand. In his pride he has opened the door to his own death. Show me where my enemy lives, and today he goes to Yama." Sugriva, sobbing, raised his joined hands. "Rama, I cannot tell you where he lives, how strong he is, or where his race comes from. But trust my promise. I will work until you have your wife again, and I will kill Ravana and his armies."
"Wake up," Sugriva went on gently. "Remember the strength you had before. A man like you should not give in to despair. I have grieved for a lost wife too, yet I have kept my nerve. If I, a humble vanaras, do not weep without end, you should hold back your tears all the more. Be steady. A man who chooses weakness sinks like a broken ship under waves of sorrow. I put my hand in yours and ask you out of love: take back your strength. I am only hinting at what you already know." Rama wiped his eyes with the hem of his cloak, and he was himself again. He put his arms around Sugriva. "You have done everything a wise friend should. A friend like you is rare in hard times."
"Now use all your power to find where Sita is kept," Rama said, "and help me find Ravana. And trust me in turn. Tell me what I can do for you, so your hopes grow like grain after rain. My words were not boasting. No one has ever heard a lie from me, and no one ever will. I swear it by my truth." Sugriva and all his chiefs were glad. His doubts gone, Sugriva said, "The gods favour me, since you have become my friend. With you beside me I could win heaven itself, so surely we can win back my kingdom. True friends stand firm in danger and share their gold and jewels, rich or poor, good or flawed. For a friend's sake they leave everything." Rama glanced at Lakshmana and approved.
Again Sugriva tore a leafy Sal branch for himself and Rama, and Hanuman brought one for Lakshmana. Rama sat calm as a windless sea. Sugriva, weeping until he could barely speak, then steadying himself, told his pain. "Vali overpowered me, took my kingdom, and drove me out with scorn. He took my wife, whom I love more than life, and chained my friends. He wants me dead. His spies came to kill me, and I killed them. That is why I feared to approach you. Only Hanuman and these few remain to me. If my brother fell, my grief would end." Rama answered, "Tell me how this hatred between brothers began, so I can weigh each side's strength. My heart swells with anger for you. Tell me before I string my bow." Sugriva and his chiefs heard this, and they were glad.
