Sugriva sat with Rama and began at the beginning. "My brother is called Vali. He was our father's eldest son, and we both honoured him. When our father died, the elders named Vali king, as was his right by birth, and I served him faithfully. Then came the demon Mayavi, son of Dundubhi's mother, who had quarrelled with Vali over a woman. One night, while the whole city slept, he came to the gates of Kishkindha and shouted his challenge into the dark. Vali heard it and rushed out in a fury. I begged him to stay, and so did his weeping wives, but he pushed them aside and went. Out of love and duty, I followed him."

"Mayavi saw two of us coming and ran. We chased him, and the moon rose and lit our way, until he leapt into a great cave overgrown with grass. Vali, burning with anger, turned to me. 'Stay here at the mouth and keep watch,' he said, 'while I go in and kill him.' I tried to stop him, but he made me swear by his feet, and went in. I waited a whole year. He never came out. Then a flood of foaming blood poured from the cave, and I heard demons roaring inside, but never my brother's voice. I believed him dead. I sealed the cave with a rock the size of a hill, made the offerings for his spirit, and went home grieving."

"For a while I hid what had happened, but when the lords learned of it they made me king. I ruled fairly. Then Vali came home, alive and triumphant, having killed the demon. He found me on his throne, and his eyes went red. He killed the lords who had crowned me and taunted me bitterly. I had the power to fight him, but I held back out of respect for him as my elder. I bowed and set his feet on my crown. 'Welcome, my lord,' I said. 'You saved us. Take back the royal umbrella and the fans. I watched a year, as you told me, and when I saw the blood I thought you were gone. They made me king against my will, only to guard the city. Forgive me.'"

"He would not. He called everyone together and told them I was an enemy dressed as a brother, that I had walled him in to take his kingdom. He said he had searched a year, killed Mayavi and all his kin, found the cave blocked, called my name with no answer, and broken out by force. Then he drove me out with nothing but a single cloth, and took my wife from me. Now I wander in fear, or live on Rishyamuka hill, missing her. I did nothing wrong. Please, help me." Rama laughed gently. "My arrows never miss. Vali will live only until I see him. I know this kind of grief myself. I will free your wife and give you back your kingdom."

Sugriva's heart lifted, but he said, "I don't doubt you, Prince. Only hear how strong Vali is. He races from ocean to ocean before sunrise. He tears peaks off mountains and tosses them like a ball. Once there was a demon shaped like a bull, named Dundubhi, as big as a mountain and as strong as a thousand elephants. Full of pride, he went to the Ocean and challenged him. The Ocean rose calmly and said, 'I am no match for you. Go to Himalaya, king of the snowy mountains, father of Sankar's queen. He will give you the fight you want.' Dundubhi thought the Ocean was afraid, and flew like an arrow to Himalaya, where he tore off huge snowy peaks and hurled them down."

"Himalaya appeared on a high summit, soft as a white cloud. 'Don't break my peaks,' he said. 'I am a home for hermits, not made for war.' Dundubhi, red-eyed, demanded, 'Then who will fight me?' Himalaya answered, 'Vali the vanara, son of Indra, rules in Kishkindha. He can meet you as an equal.' So Dundubhi came to our gate, bellowing like war drums, shaking the ground and knocking down trees. Vali came to the wall with his wives. 'I am Vali, king of the vanaras. Why are you disturbing us? Guard your life.' The demon sneered. 'Showing off in front of your women? I'll give you one night. Embrace your friends, crown your son, enjoy yourself. I won't kill a man who is drunk or careless.'"

"Vali sent Tara and the other women inside and laughed. 'You think I'm drunk? Come and fight, unless you're scared.' He set down the golden chain his father Mahendra had given him, seized the bull by the horns, swung him round and round, and slammed him down. Blood ran from the demon's ears, and they fought on with fists, feet, knees, rocks and trees, until Dundubhi weakened. Vali lifted him and smashed him to the ground, and he died. Then Vali threw the body a full league. As it flew, drops of blood fell on the hermitage of the sage Matanga. Matanga came out, saw the dead bull, knew who had done it, and cursed him: if Vali ever came within a league of that place, he would die."

"Matanga gave the vanaras living there one day to leave, or be turned to stone. They fled to Vali, who went to the sage with folded hands, but Matanga turned away. That curse is why Vali never comes near Rishyamuka, and why we are safe here. Look, there lie Dundubhi's dry white bones. And see those seven Sal trees in a row. Vali could strip them bare with one shake, and pierce each one with an arrow. How can you face him?" Lakshmana laughed. "What proof do you want?" Sugriva asked Rama to pierce one tree, or kick the bones far away. Rama smiled, nudged the skeleton with his foot, and sent it twenty leagues. "Those bones are light now," Sugriva said. "Vali threw a fresh body. Please, pierce a tree."

So Rama took up his bow and let an arrow fly. It went through all seven palms in a line, through the hill behind them, through six worlds under the earth to the very bottom, then flew back and settled in his quiver. Sugriva fell flat on the ground, then rose with joined palms. "Who could stand against you? Now my grief is gone. Strike Vali down, I beg you." Rama embraced him, and Lakshmana said, "To Kishkindha, quickly. Call him out." Hidden among the trees by the gate, Sugriva tightened his clothes and gave a great shout. Vali burst out, and the brothers fought with fists like thunderbolts. But they looked exactly alike, and Rama, bow drawn, could not tell friend from foe. Beaten and bleeding, Sugriva fled to Rishyamuka.

Vali did not chase him there, because of the curse. "Run from your death, then," he called, and went home. Rama, Lakshmana and Hanuman found Sugriva in the woods, too ashamed to look up. "Why did you deceive me? You should have told me you wouldn't kill him. Then I would never have fought alone." Rama said, "Let your anger go. You two were the same in dress, size, voice and strength. I couldn't tell you apart, and I was afraid my arrow would kill my friend. That would have been a terrible wrong, and we depend on you. Fight again. Within an hour you will see Vali fall. But wear a sign so I can know you. Lakshmana, put that flowering creeper round his neck."
